Again!! My 2nd owned sentai S.H.Figuarts collection! Here comes Tyranno Ranger from the famous Sentai show of Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger!! Featuring Yamato Tribe Prince Geki, the leader of the Zyurangers, and Burai’s little brother. He is the known as the “Warrior of Justice”. That’s according from the show… We need to notice too that there are also 2 versions of S.H.Figuarts Tyranno Ranger which is the original Japanese & US Market Ver. (for sure it was also labelled with the American adaptations franchise) Mine one is the original Japanese. In this version Tyranno Ranger has a overall red colored box with a silver colored like inner tray paper for the background of the figure showcase, sounds pretty plain, isn’t it? But, he comes up with pretty much nice accessories. Okay, let’s open him outta box!
He comes with 3 weapons (6 in total count but, 2 of them got a variable form like how in the show works), 4 pair of hand accessories, & bonus parts of Powerful Ranger from Japanese version.
Tyranno Ranger is the 17th Red Sentai Ranger, he wore a red outfit with a white diamond shaped motives on his upper body, neck, belt, boots, & gloves. Each boots & gloves got a red colored diamond shaped motives, pretty much different compare to Dragon Ranger. He also got his white colored Ranger Stick/Gun/Sword’s holster, but it looks too small for me… So far, like Dragon Ranger this is the best Tyranno Ranger figure ever made although, comparing to the original counterpart, the real Tyranno Ranger’s spandex color was also looking like a shiny metallic red, not plain red like the figure. But, it’s not a big deal atleast, the figure is still nailed his overall appearance. Tyranno Ranger is my favorite one when I was a child. S.H.Figuarts Tyranno Ranger was released in 2013 a month after his brother was released… & in the quality control wise, he also got the latest articulation points. Unlike Dragon Ranger who dons the Dragon Armor, Tyranno Ranger can move more & even twist his upper bicep a bit (though there’s no upper bicep cut). Much like his brother he didn’t have a diecast material at all, so he feels light.
Like his brother, Tyranno Ranger’s helmet sculpt also got a strong resemblance to his image in the Sentai show counterpart. But, I think he looks more accurate than his brother. The details of SHF are always been awesome, another solid work from Bandai… The sculpt of his mouth plate is made a little different than Dragon Ranger had & it’s slightly different from the show counterpart… Another note to compare with the original counterpart, the SHF one tends to have prominent shape of his Tyrannosaurus eyes, the T-Rex’s nose holes looks bigger than the real one & the mouth plate also looking a bit different but, it’s still a good effort to recreate the likeness. Like Dragon Ranger, When I first saw his prototype last year ago, I instantly interested & eager to get him. However, it’s kinda odd from Bandai that they released Dragon Ranger earlier than him, actually the 1st prototype revealed was Tyranno Ranger.
Compare to his brother, Tyranno Ranger got no Dragon Armor… Not in this version so, this Tyranno Ranger’s articulations can move his arms more than Dragon Ranger, we can create many action scenes more intense. However, I have to agree that in sort of looks , Tyranno Ranger’s design feels plain than his brother. As he doesn’t have something that was quite eye catching for us to see, except his helmet & Dino Buckler. Despite being the leader of the Zyurangers, he along with his 4 partner get less popularity than Dragon Ranger due to the existence of the Green Ranger, the US counterpart which is Tommy Oliver. Much like his brother, Dino Buckler’s sculpt is made pretty accurate to how it looks on the show minus the font of “Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger” except that it was painted silver & the coin symbol is a Tyrannosaurus Rex. The boots sculpt shows some fabric details on his lower legs, other details is on his crotch & ass to upper body has a single line mold. His buttom & back also had a weird circular mold just like Dragon Ranger, this circular mark was actually marking the locations of the screw holes just like Dragon Ranger’s back without his armor. Also, the Ranger Ranger Stick/Gun/Sword’s holsters got articulated 360 degrees rotations that allow us to recreate some appropriate action scenes & it’s removable, much like Dragon Ranger’s black colored Zyusouken’s holsters. His articulations points are the pretty much the same like Dragon Ranger but, since Tyranno got no Dragon Armor, we can move his arms more freely & I can still able to do the crossed arms pose. But, not really fond with that wobbly shoulder pads.
I have nothing to say much but, he got the exact working articulations as his brother when he’s armorless.
Tyranno Ranger comes up with Ryuugekiken, Ranger Stick/Gun/Sword, Thunder Slinger, & Ranger Slinger!! Well, Despite having a plain looking design, these parts would be very suffice to recreate his action scenes in the show. First, Ranger Stick is the primary sidearm of the five core Zyurangers which can transform into either the Ranger Sword or the Ranger Gun laser pistol. In stick mode, the 5 sticks can be used to perform the Babel Attack. Ranger Stick can be holstered into Tyranno Ranger’s holsters but, mainly remains on the holsters since we never get to see the stick in action aside the Babel Attack. Ranger Sword, was actually the stick revealing an extended blade which can be used for attacking the enemy but, they’re proven to be not powerful compared to the Legendary Weapons. While Ranger Gun, was an alternate assembled of the stick shaped into gun mode. Of course, with this you can recreate Tyranno Ranger using his Ranger Stick in variant way, the overall sculpts are outstanding, I’m loving the meticulous detailings on them replicating like how they appeared in the show. Although, my only complain is they’re little too small for the hands… Bandai created Ranger Stick/Gun/Sword’s form independently, instead of being a single weapon that we can assemble into their respective forms. Of course, it would be too small & hard for us to assemble that small parts. The Ryuugekiken (Dragon-Striking Sword) is the legendary weapon of Tyranno Ranger Geki. It’s mainly used for attacking the enemy especially on the Golems & Dora Monsters, It can be forms the targeting sight of the Howling Cannon and is able to fire energy blasts at an opponent when its wielder focuses their power into it. The Ryuugekiken have both a civilian form and a powered form that they transform into alongside the Zyurangers. I gotta say… Ryuugekiken’s detail is bloody marvelous to see, they didn’t even miss the decal mark of the Tyrannosaurus Rex symbol on it. The sword is just too damn accurate, it’s like a real thing even on the sharpness. The Thunder Slinger is modeled after a slingshot, Thunder Slinger are fired by pulling back the rear trigger and releasing it, they proved to be more powerful than even the Legendary Weapons since they could destroy Dokita monsters and incinerate Dokita Golems in one shot. & the Ranger Slinger is a combined version of Ranger Gun with Thunder Slinger, their firepower can obliterate normal sized Dokita Dora Monster and even damage enlarged Dokita Dora Monsters. Once again, another nice accessories given to Tyranno Ranger, I love everyhing on these accessories although, they still looked abit too small for Tyranno Ranger’s hands. Bandai only included 1 Thunder Slinger part but, they could have actually make another form for Thunder Slinger independently. Like the part where the slinger is being pull off like how we saw in the show where the Zyurangers pull the slinger to shoot, & the one that still pre-assembled. But, they missed this parts & I gotta warn you, these accessories can be very harmful to our skin especially kids so, best way is to keep them away from children & handle carefully.
Due to his variable weapon accessories, most of his extra hand parts are grasping hands for holding his respective weapon parts. Like Dragon Ranger, out from the box itself he already comes up with a fistful hand parts attached to his wrists, the extras are pair of open splayed 2 fingers, grasping hands for Ryuugekiken, grasping hands for Ranger Stick/Sword & grasping hands for holding the Thunder Slinger/Ranger Gun/Ranger Slinger. Open splayed 2 fingers is a very iconic style from Tyranno Ranger’s hands during his iconic choreographic style “Tyranno Ranger Geki!!”, this hand gestures are strongly referenced from Tyrannosaurus Rex’s tiny hands having only 2 fingers. They also can be used for Thunder Slinger’s scenes. The rest… I bet you know from what I mentioned before & the photos says it all. But, I was expecting Tyranno Ranger would came up with atleast open wide palm for his trademark choreographic pose with Dragon Ranger of shouting “Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger!!” & it can also be use to recreate where he’s calling upon his Shoguzyu (Guardian Beast) also, it’s pretty boring for only holding the weapons… However, since Tyranno Ranger’s hand parts shares the same mold with Dragon Ranger, I can just use Dragon Ranger’s open splayed hands, although it’s not really perfect to use because in the show, Tyranno Ranger is completely opening his whole fingers.
Once again, only in the original Japanese version, Tyranno Ranger is given a bonus parts for Powerful Ranger feature. The parts contains alternate neck & alternate belt, shows a painted American flag on them. This accessories was meant to recreate a scene from the episode 5 of Hikonin Sentai Akibaranger Season 2, where he along with Dragon Ranger acted like stereotypical American alpha male bullies. Well, like Dragon Ranger one, I don’t like this at all so, I rarely use this although it’s kinda fun to use for recreating Power Rangers parody. To change them, all you have to do is pluck out his head 1st. Then followed by his original white neck & insert the Powerful Ranger neck one. Same goes to the belt, you have to pluck out his waist joint & replace his original white belt to Powerful Ranger ones. Also, you will have to replace the Ranger Stick/Gun/Sword’s pocket into the Powerful Ranger’s belt. Pretty weird when I use the neck, because Tyranno seems to be having a long neck (though, I tried to push them in more deeper but it has no effect)..
COMPARISON BETWEEN THE US MARKET VER.
Yeah, much like Dragon Ranger there are 3 existing release of S.H.Figuarts Tyranno Ranger also which is Original Japanese, US Market Ver. and the SDCC exclusive. The US Market was given their own box labelled with the American adaptations franchise (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers). & It says in “Red Ranger” name instead of Tyranno Ranger, of course they used their American counterpart’s name… However, gotta admit the frontal box got slightly more fashionable design, it was colored silver added with some fx motives on it. The inner tray paper was colored red added with MMPR logo on it, but somehow It looks reversable because the original Japanese had it oppositely. (red colored frontal box with a plain silver colored inner tray paper) But, the back view was overally red like how in the original Japanese looks but more plain & minus the Powerful Ranger promotional photos. Actual contents has no different at all except in US Market version, Powerful Ranger parts are not given due to the Bluefin doesn’t have the rights to Hikonin Sentai Akibaranger franchise. Well, I might dislike Powerful Ranger parts, but it’s still a little better additions like Dragon Ranger was… If I ever got the US Market one, then I won’t be discussing Powerful Ranger parts in this review. Again, this doesn’t mean I’m going to ask you to get the Original Ver. better, I have to admit that the adaptations got a well designed box although you’ll only missing those extra neck & belt part, nothing else. & to know that, exchanging those parts was pain in the arse for me. While the SDCC version is an exclusive release only sold in San Diego Comic Con 2018 to celebrate 25th anniversary of Power Rangers, which the figure was once again labelled as the Power Rangers franchise but, features very different box and got alternate unmasked head of the Red Ranger.
Ah, yes… Since I finally managed to take off Dragon Ranger’s Dragon armor, I tried to make Tyranno wear this as well.. & the armor works perfectly too. Seriously, making unremovable chestplate was a total letdown, it’d be far better to make the armor being cast off as well… However, this Armed Tyranno still minus his golden armbands, like I said on Dragon Ranger‘s review, Dragon Ranger’s armbands were 1 mold to his arms, so there’s no chance for us to take off the armbands. I think it’s pretty obvious reasoning why they didn’t make the armor cast off. However… Removable or not, atleast I can still do the job on those armbands. In the episodes of “A Mystery!? The Attacking Beast Knight God” or “Gung Ho!” in MMPR, Burai lend his Dragon Armor to Geki and Geki lend his Ryuugekiken sword to Burai to distract King Brachion’s attacks while Geki takes the chest of Thunder Slinger. We get to see that Armorless Dragon Ranger with armbands on, attacks King Brachion with a combined Ryuugekiken & Zyusouken. Well, atleast the unremovable golden armbands was still useful to recreate that scenes.
For me Tyranno Ranger’s characteristic is the most epic ones compare the others because he is the leader of the Zyurangers, also his strong relationship between Dragon Ranger as his only brother made his character became more intense. On the contrary, Burai might be badass & a loner, but he doesn’t appeared as much as Geki. So, if I have to choose which character that should be the most popular, then it’s Tyranno Ranger, but design wise, Dragon Ranger is the most eye catching one… Also, in US counterpart the popularity of the Green Ranger actually overshadowed even the Red Ranger himself. Actually, Tyranno Ranger is my 1st favorite ranger but, for some reason I’ve collected Dragon Ranger more than Tyranno one. However, this is definitely another recommended S.H.Figuarts figure to collect, because he almost looked accurate to his show counterpart. If you’re looking for a decent Tyranno/Red Ranger figure, then this is your best choice! Although, I’m still a little disappointed with the small size of the Ranger Stick/Gun/Sword and Thunder Slinger.
- Solid sculpt work and details.
- Clean Paintjob.
- Good and realistic proportioned Tyranno Ranger figure like in the show.
- Currently one of the best Tyranno/Red Ranger action figure ever made.
- Some paint problem but, it’s tolerable.
- That wide butt obstacled his leg movements to create split pose.
- Missing butterfly joints.
- Hard part swapping especially swapping the Powerful Ranger parts.
Small Parts: 4/5
Accuracy sculpt: 4/5
