Yay, another Play Arts Kai figure! Seems like I’m on the roll with this line but, he’s one of a heck problem… It costs me almost a hundred bucks for this guy but, who would even cares about that, I shall present you Liquid Snake!! One of my favorite villain character from the game of Metal Gear Solid/Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes!Liquid Snake, commonly referred to as Liquid, was the former squad commander of High-Tech Special Forces Unit FOXHOUND, and the twin brother of Solid Snake. Liquid was one of the “Sons of Big Boss,” created as part of the Les Enfants Terribles project, along with his clone brothers, Solid Snake and Solidus Snake. Liquid got a plain white colored with 4 windowed box, just like Solid Snake except that his box is alot bigger than Solid Snake has. What made Liquid got a bigger box is, there’s a large gap from the box’s blister for Liquid’s trench coat space + he’s also included with display stand & don’t forget his Stinger Missile part! Honestly, PAK’s packaging are getting more inconsistent imo but, this is usually happened in MGS series because most of other PAK figures got their own standard box size like DC series. Right, outta the box now!
Liquid’s accessories consists to 2 weapon parts, 2 optional hand parts, & pre-assembled display stand. Uh, a little better than Snake has so far but, some parts aren’t exactly faithful to his game counterpart.
Serves as the primary antagonist of the original Metal Gear Solid/The Twin Snakes, Liquid is seen to wear a long brown with dark shade colored trench coat, black with shade of brown colored boots & gloves, olive colored pants with a shade of darker tone included with USP handgun holster belt (hidden inside the trench coat) on the right, black colored military belt included with 1 dark olive green colored small bag, & dog tags. Like Solid Snake, the majority of Liquid’s sculpt work is strongly based from the official artwork drawn by Yoji Shinkawa, where his trench coat appeared to be opened revealing his shirtless body, & there’s an exception that the official artwork never shown his right arm’s sleeves being rolled up. In the game, Liquid’s trench coat sleeves remained closed & he’s completely shirtless in the finale. The figure has over 26 points of articulations, & most of his joints were a ball shaped so, we can create various pose for him. Also, the figure’s material is pretty smelly, pretty much like my Snake’s figure….
Liquid’s face sculpt still retained Solid Snake’s face sculpt likeness, except with evil looking aura & there’s a darker tone face wrinkles below his eyes but, he’s not dreadful as Solid Snake imo… Unlike Snake, Liquid’s irises are painted a little darker. Liquid’s expression is pretty wicked but funny in some view, mostly on his smile. The smile is more dominant on the right side of his face. So, whenever I looked him on the right side, Liquid is shown with evil smirk. But on the left side, he looked serious just like Solid Snake’s mouth sculpt, which is why I tooked 3 pictures of his HS. My interpretations on his expression was like, if you want serious Liquid you can always see his left side head or you might prefer his evil smirk on the right side. Pretty funny but badass, eh? Of course, Liquid’s trademark long blonde colored hair with glossy white (upper & center) & some dark shade (lower)… The hair material is made soft pretty much like my Jun Kazama’s hair sculpt but, Liquid’s hair sculpt felt more delicate than Jun one altough the hair still in the way to make him heads up. One thing that I noticed, his left side sideburns were glued a bit out of range from his ear position, usually human’s sideburns were positioned close to their ears, & you can actually tell the difference judging from both side HS pictures shown above. I can’t really tell this is another error SE did or not because after I rechecked the boxart & some source. The official prototype photos also has that sideburns positioned exactly like mine one, so I think he was intended to be like that. Although, I felt a little bit odd to see each side are positioned differently.
Liquid’s proportions is made very well accurate so far, unlike Solid Snake, Liquid’s upper body (chest) looked more well proportioned. His shirtless details are pretty good, though I never liked shirtless man. However, the upper body that was covered by his trench coat was cut, as you can see front side picture above. So, it’s futile if you want a shirtless Liquid just like in the game. His trench coat material is made soft (excluding his arms) & it has a wires hidden inside the lower trench coat, this allow us to create Liquid’s dramatic wind blowing trench coat & make his articulations works more vast. The trench coat was also given extra soft material shoulder pad, & with this Liquid looked more bossy but, I suggest becareful when you handle his shoulder joints. Because the pad can easily off from his shoulder joints but, do not be fret that there’s a peg joint to reattach them. Liquid’s dog tags were made separately, we can even took it off from Liquid by pluck out his head. His right sleeves is made rolled up, revealing his bare lower arm in order to recreate his trademark right arm’s pose style & perhaps for future references? Like Ocelot stole Liquid’s right arm, maybe? Several articulations are hard to deal correctly, especially his shoulder & crotch joint. If you’re thinking about the trench coat or that beltpack in the way, they’re actually not a big problem as the trench coat material is made soft so, & we can even swivel his beltpack since it’s made separately between his crotch. Btw, comparing the products between the boxart/official prototype photos, they’re actually pretty faithful imo, so Liquid’s sculpt work ain’t dissapointing. Also, this time or maybe I’m pretty lucky, that his whole paintjob is pretty solid so far, since I don’t see any paint bleeds or paint transfer at all on him.
His articulations are pretty close to Snake, Liquid got a movable head that can be rotate 180 degrees & bend down but, you cannot swivel fully because, the collar are quite in the way. He can also stretch the waist & chest to the back but, not really much.
Liquid also got a movable the torso but, we cannot rotate it 180 degrees due to the trenchcoat & his torso can be bend to the side. We can also bend his head to the side a little.
His elbow joints can be rotate 180 degrees, so we can do a crossed arm pose for Liquid. He also got butterfly joints but, he can’t recreate close hug arms since there’s a limit due to his trenchcoat problem.
Size doesn’t matter, we can create many dynamic leg posing for Liquid, & his joints doesn’t looked awkward. Like other PAKs his elbow articulations are quite limited that we can’t bend them much. Like his brother, Liquid cannot bend his feet to the side but, there’s a cut joints on the front feets that will allow us to swivel his feets. We can also bend his chest a little.
Crotch articulations can do gymnastic split pose as well & he can perform high kick but, there’s a little problem on my Liquid that his left crotch articulations couldn’t go wider than the right leg so, his high kick actions are a little low. Unlike Snake, Liquid’s feet could balance his body. His shoulder articulations are also limited as Snake, he cannot raise his arms to the side much. However, his movements are not worse than Snake.
Liquid is given 2 weapon parts, which is Stinger Missile (known as FIM-92 Stinger) & USP (Universale Selbstladepistole or “universal self-loading pistol”) Handgun. Unfortunately, there are no scenes of Liquid involving himself with these weapons in the MGS/TTS, instead Stinger was majorly used by Solid Snake to destroy Hind D & Metal Gear REX, piloted by Liquid. It’s quite ironic for him somehow to use Stinger Missile as they used to destroy all of his weapons… Good thing that Stinger part can be shared to Solid Snake since his option hand parts are pretty much the same to Liquid, & I think Stinger was made for that purpose. Now, with stinger we can recreate Solid’s Snake’s scenes using Stinger just like in the game, stinger has a hinge jointed tracker so we can create the user track the target. Another weapon is a USP Handgun, it can be holstered in his holster belt on the right & the holster also has a strap on it. I think it was made for extra complement for him, I definitely approved this since Liquid will be damn boring if he has no weapon or if he only got FAMAS rifle like how he should be, while we already have Solid Snake who has FAMAS as well… Besides, I love guns! More variant weapons are needed! The weapon details never dissapoint me at all, it is surprising that Stinger’s material aren’t that heavy eventhough it’s big as hell & even almost tall as Liquid himself. Btw, USP was again originally used by Solid Snake in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty but, Solid’s USP was equiped with infrared sensor & silencer.
Liquid’s default hands from the box are fistful hands, as usual for many figures. The extra is a pair of 2 different hand parts, they were entirely used for holding the weapons, the right one is for primary holding & pull the trigger & the left one is a secondary holding his weapon during holding with the right hand. All in all, it is the same as Solid Snake’s option hand parts, except Liquid’s hand uses peg joint to exchange them & well proportioned.
Unlike Solid Snake, Square Enix also provided a clear colored display stand for Liquid, included pre-assembled. If you’re having trouble how to assemble them, you can read the instruction manual paper. They provided 2 kinds of stand tweezers, a big one & the small one. The big one, is very needed due to Liquid being a big guy, even bigger than Solid Snake. Frankly, without the display stand Liquid can still balance himself better than Solid Snake, especially he can still balance his trench coat but, becareful when you pose him without stand since he couldn’t withstand a shake.
Liquid’s faithful weapons in the game are actually Hind D, Metal Gear REX & FAMAS rifle in the end. It’s unfortunate that I cannot afford to buy 3A Metal Gear REX, but fortunately I can use Solid Snake’s FAMAS part to recreate some of his scenes using FAMAS rifle. However, I don’t recall myself he uses FAMAS wearing his trench coat, as he’s shirtless in during using it.
Due to Snake’s scale, Liquid is made big & tall & in both photos Liquid looked taller than Snake. To those who asked/disliked why Snake appeared to be shorter is, following in the game they’re only 1 cm different. According to the MGS data: Snake’s height was written 182 cm while Liquid was 183 cm. However, this is contrast as in one of the cut-scenes exclusive for MGS: TTS, (picture above) that both of their height seems equal. So if you want to recreate this scenes (face to face), Liquid have to lower down his head while Snake have to raise up his head. I actually prefer them to be equal since I like this scenes but, what to do it’s faithful to the original PSX game. Although there are no scenes where the polygonated Snake & Liquid standing together. About the scenes, Liquid is sure strong enough to withstand himself outside the base being shirtless, as you know it’s Alaska & it’s goddamn freezing outside. While Snake was warned by either Meryl or Otacon (depending the ending you’d go) that he’ll need a clothes. In front view Liquid’s hand sculpt looked bigger than Snake but, in the side view Snake’s hands looked wider than Liquid. Their skin color tone are both the same, so you can actually try to headswap their head if you want. One thing, If you’re expecting for Snake to be remade, I kinda doubt they will do that since Snake is already appeared as he should be with Liquid. & If you’re hoping Solid Snake to be reissued it’s impossible, because in an interview of Square Enix Merchandise Coordinator Kelsey Britt, she stated everything is a single line, if they ever do reissue they’ll probably do the variant color of the product. The conclusions are what it’s made, it’s made. So, there will be no reissue for all PAK figures. But, they never mentioned about renew product, so it’s up to your thoughts now.
Well well… I bet you can see them perfectly, the fact that even Stinger Missile part is made long & it beat both PAK Sakura & Jun’s height. Also, Liquid is goddamn big & strong enough to maintain his balance, as he can even hold 2 girls!! But, I don’t recall myself to know Liquid can carry 2 girls in the game, but he could possibly carry Meryl….
Liquid marked to be my 4th owned Play Arts Kai figure. So far, he’s very badass & there’s alot of satisfactions on him for me who likes Metal Gear Solid games & a gun lover. However, I can say this is between recommended & not. Recommended, if you have Solid Snake figure then you need Liquid since they need each other & if you’re an avid fan of Metal Gear Solid, then Liquid is a must have. Not recommended, if you missed the Solid Snake figure because Liquid is given with Stinger Missile which I think that Stinger was included in favor for Solid Snake. In the game, Liquid is never shown using Stinger at all, instead we get to see Stinger Missile numerously used by Solid Snake. But, it’s not a big deal for me, I’m still satisfied to own him & I have to admit that the sculpt work of Liquid looked more well proportioned than Snake. I can’t really tell he’ll be sells well & become rare as Solid Snake was, but all I can say just grab him while you still can! Waiting for Solid Snake MGS2 & Old Snake now!
Pros: Liquid got a very flexible material for his trench coat, we can even create many dramatic scenes of the wind blowing or action scenes. Surprisingly that despite wearing trenchcoat Liquid can still balance himself better than Solid Snake. Stinger Missile part is pretty light & very easy to handle, USP handgun is a fine improvised accessories for Liquid, in actual game Liquid only uses FAMAS as his only firearm weapon. & his final product turned out exactly perfect like the protoype photos of the boxart. This Liquid design is based from the artwork of Yoji Shinkawa, which is appeared differently than in the game, so recreating ingame scenes aren’t really necessary unless if they made trench coat to be cast-off. Packaging is alot better since they’re not troublesome to be taken off from the blister & there’s no part that are forcefully pushed to the blister. Also, this time blister box was included with a resealable tray.
Cons: Some of his articulations is a huge let down for me, on the crotch I’m not able to create a pose that involves him duck or performing a proper kick. Liquid’s shoulder articulations was a hard one to deal, it’s the same as how Solid Snake’s shoulder works. It’ll be better if they made his trench coat to be cast-off so we can create shirtless or well dressed Liquid just like in the game. His box packaging is too damn big as hell.
Small Parts: 3/5
Accuracy sculpt: 5/5
