Today’s review will be another S.H.Figuarts. Man, another Figuarts review?! Well, blame Bandai for creating one of my favorite character into SHF which is Son Gokou Normal Ver.!! As you know Son Gokou, better known as simply Goku, is a protagonist character of the Dragon Ball manga series written by Akira Toriyama. Goku is introduced in chapter #1 Bulma and Son Goku, originally published in Japan’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine on December 3, 1984, as an eccentric, monkey-tailed boy who practices martial arts and possesses superhuman strength. Goku is initially believed to be an Earthling, but is later revealed to be a member of an extraterrestrial warrior race called the Saiyans. He later discovers his birth name, Kakarotto. SHF Goku is an exclusive release from Bandai, very insanely odd why he’s an exclusive while you may noticed how popular he is in the anime world… Oh, well… Unlike my other Exclusive SHF release, Goku was given with a window box which shows the figure in the box. Frankly, I really love this box design better since I can get to see the figure inside, instead of starring the blind box. Goku’s overall box was colored Red with his black colored boxart preview face sculpt & white for the font & background on the back, his inner tray paper was colored standard gray like my other standard release SHF collections excluding Mercury, Dragon Ranger, & my pre-owned Ichigo Sakurajima. However, Goku’s back box descriptions are mostly written in English excluding the warning banner, which is different compare to my other SHF figures. The interesting part is, Goku was included with lots of accessories that is fitting to his portrayal in the anime.
What do we got… Preassembled lifeless Kamehameha FX, 4 pair of hand accessories & extra 1, & 4 variant faceplates. Nice!!
Well, judging from Goku’s trademark orange colored Gi, with, blue colored undershirt, wrist bands, boots (contains red lines & gray strings), & belt. This figure was strongly based from his appearance in major Dragon Ball Z series. His sculpting is pretty nice & meticulously well detailed & his articulations also works very dynamic as we can create various poses of him, although some of his joints looks pretty ugly in some pose. & comparing to the boxart prototype, the actual figure was accurate enough so, there’s no differences like my SHF Mercury. Yes, he didn’t have any diecast material, yet another plastic materials.
Man, Goku’s iconic spiky hair is beautifully well made, I really loved the spike details although it missed some single strands like in the anime. Goku was included with 5 variant faceplates, 1st standard serious expression for battle scenes as his default faceplate, 2nd standard happy expression, this is Goku’s usual expression being a happy person, 3rd more happy expressions with eyes closed & grins, this is for his character portrayal being a cheerful person, 4th surprised/shocked expressions, I think this is like when he faces Chichi, his wife, & last one is more serious expression with open mouth for sure & irises looking to the left, this face was used to recreate his Kamehameha scenes. All these expressions are sculpted very intense, the paintjob is quite impressive & I don’t spot anything wrong from them. Swapping his face parts is pretty pain the arse on the begining… One thing I don’t like is all of Goku’s faceplates tends to have more yellow skin tone compared to the rests of his body which is pale but, it’s barely noticeable.
Goku’s trademark spiky hair may looked good but, it makes me wonder how the heck in the anime/manga Goku’s upper spiky hair can change directions whenever he turns his head. Well, it’s a 2D world, you can change everything you wish but, not in this 3D realizations. Goku’s spiky hair at certain angle can be odd looking because of his spikes only shown on one direction. I guess, you’ll have to bear this reality… Goku’s Gi’s fabric sculpt is really well detailed but, it’s abit overdid somehow… His articulations works good, especially on his arms… There’s a ball jointed shoulder pad of a separated part of his Gi & undershirt, although in certain poses the shoulder pad looks off due to be made separated from his body but, I like this way better since it makes his movements works more better. Goku’s shoulder cut looks freaking awkward especially when you see them on the front, the tips are sharp & they didn’t looked natural. His paintjob are actually acceptable, I liked how his arms, neck, & upper chest added with a shade. Goku’s Gi doesn’t have any symbols on it so, this is noting his appearance during Android saga until Kid Buu saga.
Waist and crotch joint can be move up and down, when you move up the waist this will allow us to be able on swivelling his upper waist works even more… While the crotch joint allows us to make split pose more dynamic.
Goku’s head can be rotate it 180 degrees and bend down but, he cannot look up much. He can also stretch his waist to the back but, abit limited.
We can swivel his waist 180 degrees perfectly & bend his waist to the side.
Again, my favorite joints of his upper bicep cut!! He can do a crossed arm pose perfectly than my other SHF!! I really love this one!! Oh, wait?! Did Goku once show this pose? Yes, but not much as Vegeta or Piccolo did… Goku got no butterfly joints on his shoulders so, he can’t do close hug arms.
Hate to admit but, this looks ugly… Goku’s knee joints looks simillar to my PAK Jun Kazama but, more hideable… However, dealing with them is quite pain. Because, when we bend his knees, there’s a 2 peg on each knee which blocked his knee movement when we want to stretch them back. This can be a little tricky but, all you have to do while bending his upper knee you’ll have to stretch the lower knee joint back. Overall, his knee joints doesn’t pleased me enough… Goku’s elbow & feet articulations works pretty standard like my other SHF collections but, his toe can be move down. Which is different that my other SHF collections couldn’t move down their toe.
Although, Goku’s knee joints sucks but, his crotch articulations can do gymnastic split pose & he can perform high kick smoothly. Unlike my SHF BLACK series collections, his shoulder pad’s ball joints was located on the back of his shoulder & it’s also articulated.
Judging from his Anime counterpart, this SHF was actually faithful enough. Like I said, in the anime/manga Goku’s spiky hair always change directions whenever he turn his head… As you can see, I tried to imitate the head angle just like in the anime & his hair looks very different because the position of his upper spiky hair was on the right side of his head. Unless, if I did some mirror image from the opposite directions & he looks perfect indeed.
Ah, yes… Look what we got here, a spiky ball? No, It’s a Kamehameha FX parts, it is included preassembled with single ball & 7 variant spikes. Each 7 spikes must be inserted into the ball’s hole & you’re done assembling them, also you’ll have to use Goku’s open splayed hands for this feature & his more serious face parts with open mouth for sure & irises looking to the left to make the scene more expressionist. That’s it, you’re done recreating Kamehameha pose with lifeless FX!! 🙂 Frankly, I don’t like this part at all… This is even worse than my other collections who has FX parts. Sorry, Bandai… I know you put alot of effort on this but, this is more like a garbage for me. Yeah, blame me because I used to create a CGI FX.
Goku was included with fistful hands as his default hand parts, the extras are 1 open wide 2 fingers for teleportations scenes, a pair of open splayed 2 fingers for his battle stance, 2 open splayed hands for kamehameha parts, & open wide finger hands for chop or salute. His bare hands were sculpted pretty meticulous, the details are beyond from what I expected as you can see the wrinkles of his fingers, & fingernails… This is awesome!! Even looks more detailed than my PAK Jun’s bare hands… Also, swapping his hands was unexpectedly easy.
Judging from their height, Goku is slightly taller Mercury. However, it may seems so but, Goku’s legs are abit shorter than Mercury’s sexy legs. On the begining, I thought SHF Goku would appear more taller than my other SHF collections.
The US release are given with Funimation’s logo, representing the US dub of the show & a variant Toei logo which was printed purple with silver sticker paper & has an english written on it. In the Japanese release which mine one as well, Toei Stickers was printed black in a gold colored sticker paper & of course the fonts are written in Japanese. That’s it, only stickers what differs them.
Goku Normal eventually got his own bootleg version made by Datong, Datong is a Chinese company that produced mainly the existing release of SHF DBZ figures & some other releases like Super Mario & the Playsets. They actually became famous because some of their close accurate duplicate on DBZ SHF figure series, even some of collectors prefered Datong better than the original. But I don’t exactly know whether it’s true or not because I don’t have 1 or get to touch them. They mainly bought by those who did not managed to get the original ones due to most of their limited release & rare status with over price tag. The pics were taken from Ebay seller of China, & the differences I saw so far:
- Box design was made identical to the original but, the writings are in Chinese language. & of course, no sticker or even Bandai & Tamashii Nations logo printed on it, instead it has 2 Datong logo printed on it.
- All of his faceplates eyebrows looks slightly thicker than the original.
- Skins looks slightly darker than the original.
Wow, this really surprised me… Datong Goku almost looks identical enough to the original one, I can’t almost tell the differences besides the box. Despite being cheap, the sculpt & paintjob looks very close to the original, no wonder they became famous to all DBZ collectors. Well, this made me think I might will be getting my own Datong DBZ figure someday, however… I might be wrong to judge them, since I never get to see or touch directly on my own. If you spot any other differences, let me know.
My final thought this Goku is alot of fun to play since his face parts makes the figure more lively & his hands also sculpted well detailed for a 1/12 figures, honestly this accessories are the only things that made me really happy to own this figure. The figure was actually so so & not really special, rather a bit dissapointing. Still, this Goku is worth to have so I say this is quite recommended especially for a Dragon Ball fans. Get him while you still can, Goku Normal Ver. is an exclusive release so he may become overpriced one day especially to know he’s the main protagonist of Dragon Ball series. Goku Normal became my 2nd owned SHF anime side after Mercury, & the 3rd would probably be Saturn. I’m not interested to get Super Saiyan Goku or 3, because Super Saiyan Goku looks ugly for me but, his Super Saiyan 3 was actually pretty decent but, he’s expensive by now & I’m not that hyped getting his 3rd form. I actually wants to get Vegeta Normal form but, I don’t like his design in Saiyan Saga. I prefer him with the Saiyan armor in Android-Cell saga. As for Gohan, I’m waiting for Ultimate Gohan & Future Gohan. As for the others, I’m also planning to get Android 18 before but, her PO opens at the very wrong time for me so, I think I’ll have to pass her especially she’s also an exclusive release. Also, due to the many thieves who stole my photos, I put watermark on my figure photos, now. So, it is useless if you ever want to steal & admit it’s yours!
Pros: Goku’s variable faceplates really fits his portrayal in the anime counterpart & he’s alot of fun to play. His arm joints works better than my other SHF collections as he could do crossed arms perfectly. I’m loving his hand sculpt, they looked very well-detailed & he’s user friendly.
Cons: His knee is really a troublesome whenever I want to stretch them back due to a 2 pegs blocking the joint movement. The gap of his armpit joints is clearly too visible but, that depends how you pose his shoulder. His shoulder also cut looks freaking awkward having a sharp edge… Goku’s fabric sculpt is a little overdid on his pants, Goku’s hair looks weird on some angles but, that’s how he looks in 3D world so deal with it.
Small Parts: 5/5
Accuracy sculpt: 5/5
Hahahaha… I’ve always wanted to recreate this scenes where Goku begging Old Kai to spoil about his secret technique. Since, there’s no Old Kai figure, so I use Kibaranger since he’s a pervert.
CRIKEY!! WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?!
Kibaranger instantly fainted…
Thanks for reading! 😀
