F… Finally, my childhood anime crush… Hotaru Tomoe is here on my collections! Yes, it’s another SHF review by me featuring S.H.Figuarts Sailor Saturn, from a famous anime series Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon by Naoko Takeuchi. Sailor Saturn is one of the four Outer Senshi of the Solar System, and was the tenth Sailor Senshi to be introduced. Her civilian identity is Hotaru Tomoe. Her attacks are based around silence and destruction, death, and rebirth; she has the ability to annihilate a planet and even an entire star system, as well as resetting the evolution of the same to zero and powers granted by her Silence Glaive. This Saturn was made based from her anime counterpart version, which she looked more cuter compare to her manga counterpart. Sailor Saturn’s box was overally colored in purple & dark purple with some minor dark pink & on the front view, it even got a light purple colored inner tray paper for the background of the figure showcase. Another flashy boxart just like Mercury but, I like this better somehow… Saturn comes up with tons of nice accessories but, not quite much as Mercury.
Here we go 3 variant faceplates, Silence Glaive weapon, 4 pair of hand accessories, & a display stand.
Being the soldier of death & rebirth, Saturn’s Sailor fuku is dominated by pearl purple & pearl white. She wears long high-heeled boots up to the knee, that are laced up. The gloves are over the elbows and the last row of purple is a little edgy pointing out. The collar has no lines, but the choker has a small star, similar to a heart crystal. There’s another larger heart crystal badge on her bow on her chest & another one bow on the back of her skirt. Both bows are a dark maroon. Unlike the other senshis, her shoulder pads look like little wings. Saturn also had a gold colored tiara with white pearl gem on her forehead but, it is unknown whether Saturn was able to use Tiara actions like Moon or able to focus her energy from her tiara to combine powers, like other inner Senshis did. Saturn was released in August 23 2014, which she was released a month after Jupiter. Her articulation points are exactly the same like my SHF Mercury but, with an retouchment’s of sculpt work. Bear no diecast material at all, & she’s smaller than Mercury, so she’s very light to hold. However, I’m still a little disappointed by her QC but, she’s slightly better than my Mercury. Unlike Mercury, her boxart pictures are pretty faithful enough to her actual products, except that her choker looks slightly slimmer than the boxart one.
Like Mercury, Saturn’s entire headsculpt & faceplates are strongly based from her anime counterpart, she looks gentle & elegant so far. Saturn got a straight, black-purple hair frames her small face to the chin & her eyes are purple which match her whole appearance. The earrings are a small pendant was colored pearl white. Saturn was included with 4 variant faceplates, 1st gentle smile expression (it’s already attached to her figure), 2nd angry/serious expression for battle scenes, 3rd a calm closed eyes expression, & 4th more angry/serious expression (more because with open mouth & sharp eyes for sure). Unlike Mercury, each of her faces doesn’t have any alphabet marked ABCD ontop of her respective faceplates. Her gentle smile face part was used to recreate Saturn’s trademark pose during her transformations scenes or any calm moods on Saturn. Angry/serious & more angry/serious was definitely used for creating battle scenes or any bad moods on Saturn. & finally her closed eyes was meant to recreate more calm expression on Saturn but, can be used for various purpose. Saturn has always been my very first favorite senshi & even my childhood crush, while Mercury was my 2nd favorite. Saturn’s sculpt work is very solid, the tiara was made weldone enough & exchanging her faceplate is a little easier than exchanging Mercury’s faceplates. Like, Mercury & even Goku Normal, they used 3 peg joints on her faceplates, same goes to her fringe. To exchange her face you’ll have to open her fringe 1st & pull out the peg joints from the holes of her head, then insert one of her faceplates that you want into the holes then reinsert her fringe & you’re done. So far, I’m so overjoyed on her, she’s not short necked as Mercury although there’s a slight disappointment. One of my Saturn’s face got a paint transfer of her tiara paintjob & her more angry serious left white eyeball wasn’t painted well. Comparing between the anime’s appearance, she’s very look alike to the anime, especially those gentle smile. However, the difference I noticed is only on her choker which appeared to be slimmer than the anime, & the position was also different as the figure one was completely lower between to her shoulder, while the anime has it hanged on the center of the neck near to her chin.
Sailor Saturn’s body looked pretty much the same as Mercury but, she’s made shorter. Her articulations are also simillar although, there’s still some part that bugged me alot. Like Mercury, Saturn’s dress was overally colored pearl like, excluding her skins & hair. Her designs are more eye catching for me than Mercury so, I think this Saturn was special. Saturn’s neck doesn’t made separated like Mercury. From articulation wise, Saturn is also easy to pose & since she’s short haired but, balancing her body was pain in the arse. Her high-heeled boots feet troubles me a lot since she’s easy to fall. Saturn doesn’t have upper bicep cut articulations as well but, we can still cross her arms. Also, due to Saturn’s straight, hair frames to the chin we cannot see her face from the side…
Lol, this time Bandai didn’t disappoint me on how her butt was made… I guess they’re improving themselves to create a better products, however… That crotch, ugh…
She got movable head that can be rotate it 180 degrees & bend down & fortunately, Saturn could look up a bit higher than Mercury although hair piece on the back is still quite an obstacle. She can also stretch her waist to the back a little.
I thought she’ll work the same as Mercury but, we can swivel Saturn waist full 180 degrees & bend her chest to the side more bend.
Eventhough Saturn doesn’t have upper bicep cut joints but, creating crossed arm pose is alot easier on Saturn. However, to do the pose perfectly & was pretty hard & she doesn’t have butterfy joints & couldn’t do close hug arms thanks to that shoulder wings in the way.
Much like Mercury, Saturn’s leg articulations are also nicely made & that sexy looking legs, we can create many dynamic posing for her as well. Her knee joints are hideable enough. Her elbow & feet articulations works the same like other SHF but, moving the elbow is still a little limited like Mercury. Saturn can also bend her chest to the front a little. But, due to her shoulder pad, rotating her arms for full 180 degrees is impossible.
WOW!! Her crotch articulations can do gymnastic split pose even better than Mercury!! but again, her feet couldn’t balance herself so I used her display stand. Unfortunately, even raising her arms higher is impossible because of her shoulder pad. Shame that, we cannot make one of her attack pose which is Silence Wall.
Yes, it is indeed Saturn was included with Silence Glaive part, the scythe spear weapon that Sailor Saturn uses in battle. This part was nicely sculpted & I’m liking the details on the scythe & the bottom part. The spear appeared to be taller than Saturn herself. However, I couldn’t managed to recreate Silence Wall pose as her shoulder pad is in the way to raise her arms.
Saturn’s default hands was an open splayed hands, the extras consists to a pair of fistful hands, open wide finger hands, hand grip for holding the Silence Glaive, & she’s also included with gesturing finger hands like SailorMoon’s iconic choreographic pose saying “In the name of the Moon! I will punish you!”. Okay, I’m quite understand the reasons of including the 1st to 4 pair of hands but, gesturing finger hands? Strange, I never saw Saturn showing a gesturing hand pose like that in most of her appearance, did I miss something? I’ll take a look again on the episodes then.
Like Mercury, Saturn also included with her own clear colored stage set with heart shaped base & it has a printed purple colored font of “Sailor Saturn” as well as Saturn symbol & some FX. The base got 3 holes to be inserted on her triple jointed stand, simillar to Tamashii Stage Act 4 & I think I really need this since I’m completely pissed on balancing Saturn’s pose. Also, Silence Glaive can be put standing on her stand without Saturn holding it, all you have to do is to pop out one of the plastic circles under the display base. There are 2 of them, the circles are able to pop in the three holes in the base. If you pop into the hole on the side of the base, her Silence Glaive will fit in it. But, the Silence Glaive did not standing perfectly due to the larger hole to fit Silence Glaive’s bottom.
Like I said, Saturn is shorter than my Mercury, because Saturn is the second youngest Sailor Senshi, with Sailor ChibiMoon being the youngest of them all. But, Is it just me? Saturn looks more mature than Mercury eventhough she’s younger… Judging on Saturn’s fuku design, she’s directly based from SailorMoon S which the 3rd seasons of SailorMoon series but, in this SHF products the franchise only shown SailorMoon’s 1st season logo instead of SailorMoon S. The notable differences are in the shoulder, bows, collar, gloves, boots, & necklace. Saturn’s arm & hand appeared to be slightly smaller & shorter than Mercury. Also, Saturn’s high-heeled boots appeared to be different which looks sharper on the lower feet, I think this is why Saturn is easy to fall. On the begining, I thought Saturn is going to be easy to balance herself like Mercury since they’re short haired… According to my eyes, their skin color tone looked pretty much different. Saturn’s skin color looks more fleshy from the slight red-ish, whereas Mercury looks completely yellow-ish. I personally prefer Saturn’s skin color better than Mercury.
Apparently, due to her young age, Saturn’s hand accessories were made to be smaller than Mercury but, surprisingly, they can be shared… Some looks awkward but, some looks less… Saturn’s fistful hand appeared to be different from the thumb finger’s position & looked more well sculpted than Mercury one.
Yes, like other inner senshi’s figuarts, Saturn also available her bootleg version. The pics were taken from Ebay seller of China, & the differences I found so far according to my eyes (since I don’t have it):
- Box has no sticker or even Bandai & Tamashii Nations logo printed on it. This is pretty common to all SailorMoon’s figuarts series bootlegs.
- Her bow color looks darker than the original.
- Her purple painting looks lighter than the original.
- Her wrists joints were colored flesh rather than pearl white.
- Her neck is pretty much longer than the original.
- Her face parts looks messy just like other SailorMoon figuarts series bootleg.
- The black laced boots aren’t properly painted.
Well, that’s what I saw so far, let me know if you found something else on her. Hope this will help to those who wants to get her, & it is indeed her prices is alot cheaper than you would imagine but, don’t be tempted on it. So, be advise on yourself!!
I’m overally satisfied with her, Bandai really fixed their previous mistakes… She’s very fun to handle & I like on how she look so faithfully to the anime counterpart… As for recommended or not, I’d say the same thing as I mentioned Mercury which is yes & no… Yes, because handling her is pretty easy & if you’re looking for a faithful Sailor Saturn’s articulated figure, this is your best choice. No, because she’s a troublesome to balance herself during posing as she’s easy to fall & you might get a slight minor defects on the several face parts. Like Mercury & the rest of the other Inner Senshis Saturn is a reguler release but, it’s kinda odd that Saturn only appears in a total of 9 episodes, by far the fewest amount of all main Senshi. Even, Saturn is also the only one of the Solar System Senshi to never appear in a movie. The reasons why I bought Saturn is because of I used to know Hotaru Tomoe only, when I was a kid I used to love her & won’t missed myself watching her on TV. Why I only know her as Hotaru? Apparently, the Indonesian’s dub tried to leave Sailor Saturn out as much as possible. Why?! Because, the katakana words of Sailor Saturn in Japan was read “Sērā Satān” so, they mistooked her as Sailor Satan instead of Saturn which they thought the word of “Satan” was inappropriate for children’s audiences. What a bummer… Saturn is my 3rd SHF Non-Toku collections, after I completed my SHF BLACK series my next Senshi to get would be Sailor Jupiter which she’s already been released a month before Saturn was released.
- Good sculpt work.
- Accurate to the anime counterpart.
- Fitting accessories.
- Easy to handle.
- Flexible material on her shoulder pad & skirt.
- Can do more dynamic articulations than Mercury.
- Better skin color tone than Mercury.
- Slight paintjob problem on several face parts.
- Limited movements on the arms due to the shoulder pad.
- She’s hard to balance without display stand.
- Face parts was kinda hard to exchange but, slightly easier than Mercury.
- Unlike other SHF’s hands, Saturn’s hand grip was made hard so, you need to do a little force to make her holding the Silence Glaive.
- One of the hand grip was kinda loose & cannot withstand the weight of the Silence Glaive part.
Small Parts: 4/5
Accuracy sculpt: 4/5
