Hello! My review this time will discuss some vintage toy line called Microman by Takara, there are so many series on this line but, the one I’m going to review is the 1999 line which is called Microman Magne Powers series!! Wow, counting from this review being posted they’re now 17 years old, some people these day might do not know since they nolonger being produce & they may be also forgotten because, the series was known to had a mild success. The toys received poor sales due to being different from their predecessors back in 1974-1980 & they’re aimed mostly for children, this series also got their own anime show called “Chiisana No Kyojin Microman” or “The Little Giant Microman” & it is the 1st & currently the only series that features the anime show of Microman. You might wonder why I bought them despite I’m aware of their poor reactions, right? Well, I’ll tell your further on the main review, 1stly the toys consists 5 member of Microman Magne Powers series. Who are they? The card says “Microman is a super human 8 cm tall. He came to the earth, chasing the Acroyer. Now, save the earth from Acroyer! Use a table as a base!” Well, they’re all super human but, they’re tiny, they disguised themselves as action figures on earth. The characters are: 001 Arthur, the fearless leader & the main character, he wear red armor & white for pelvic & side chest armor & black arms & lower legs. 002 Izam, the nature lover & noble swordsman, he wear white armor & purple for pelvic & side chest armor. 003 Walt, the cheerful optimistic with attitude & full of combat tactics, he wear blue armor & light blue for pelvic & side chest armor. 004 Edison, the smartass one, he wear green armor & yellow for pelvic & side chest armor. & 005 Odin, the calm gifted with powerful strength, he wear black armor & orange for pelvic & side chest armor. Each Microman was packaged with their own blister card with the same design of card but, different number & of course… Sold separately. Okay, here’s the all 5 toys out of the blister card!
They only comes up with their own only toy with mini book & a card. From left to right: Arthur, Izam, Walt, Edison & Odin.
Despite how tiny the books are, they’re all printed in color with nice artwork & photos!!
Inside the book contains so many featured products with their own features either magnets/change/combination. The book also has one page that shows Microman toys can be combine together with Acroyear toys but, the combination don’t make any appearance in the anime, and there’s also a sketches of their next products featuring Magne Animal… Well, that was a long time ago in 1999, not this present day. Unfortunately, the books are all written in Japanese but, with that bunch of promotional photos, they are more than enough to tell everything. Also, kinda loled with that “Comming Soon” word… Though, English isn’t my first language as well.
Each Microman also given some kind of comment card & once again all written in Japanese. I don’t think this is necessary to be review since they’re now outdated.
Despite being an 8 cm tall, these Microman toys was articulated but, limited. Well, I think it’s fine enough for an old toys but, hey! In 1974-1980, Takara already did better than this! That surprised me, I wasn’t even born yet at that generation lol… Of course, I don’t even know the 1st generation of Microman toys so, I can’t make a good statement on comparing them, all I ever want to do now is to enjoy myself playing these toys. These guys was loosely considered as part of my childhood since I’m pretty new on playing Microman line, & I used to know these guys from a different name in my country. These Microman wear armored outfit, each of them got their own colors & head sculpt, making them closely resembles to those Super Sentai series. The toys mainly made from a clear plastic, mostly on the torso, legs & shoulders, their heads was painted in chrome color while their chest was colored shiny gold. Others was overall solid plastic on the lower legs & arms, the toys also included with magnets for their unique features given from the name “Magne Powers”.
All Microman has their head colored in chrome style & they got their own sculpt, for a start I begin with Arthur’s head sculpt. Arthur perhaps the only guy that don’t wear helmet compare to his other members, he only wear headset with some kind of horns on it but, I don’t know what they are used for in anime perhaps communicator? His head is a note from the original Microman that they don’t wear helmet but, only has their head colored chrome. As for the head sculpt himself, I’m liking the details Takara put on his side styled hair, his face sculpt also looks prominent enough. I have to admit it was pretty meticulous work for a small toy… Anyway, he’s my 2nd favorite character & Arthur was considered as the main character, he’s the leader of the Micromans. Of course, he’s a typical goody two shoes being the wisest & always seeks for justice. Arthur uses Ultra Magnetic Power from his Magnetic Arm.
2nd, aside Arthur, the rests of the Micromans wear their own helmet resembling animals. Izam, however wear unique helmet but, I can’t tell what kind of animal that Izam wear for his helmet… His helmet is pretty big enough because of the pointed visors, the helmet has a visible jaw & we can clearly see his shaped mouth. The thoughts is still the same that Takara put some meticulous works on sculpting his helmet but, Izam is my least favorite after Odin… Izam was born as a noble & expert swordsman, he’s considered as the youngest of all members but, he’s also the 2nd in command after Arthur. His characteristic is calm & he’s a nature lover. Izam uses Dragon Blade power by using his Magne Sword.
3rd, Walt wear eagle shaped helmet, you can actually tell from the peck of his helmet for sure… His helmet got 2 horns on the back side resembling eagle’s spike fur. Perhaps, his helmet animal style looks more convincing compare to Izam & Edison, Walt’s helmet still has his jaw uncovered so we can still see his shaped mouth. Walt is my personal favorite because I’m a fan of blue & eagle, he reminds me alot to an old strategy game called Dune 2000, Atreides symbol!! Walt is considered as an expert combat tactics he usually came up with unexpected strategy but, he tends to always have conflict with Edison’s perfectionist thinking. Walt’s character shows him being cheerful & optimistic with attitude. Walt uses Water element as his power by using his Magnetic Arm, he can also breath under the water.
4th, Edison wear mantis styled helmet. Ah, that 2 big buns on the side are his mantis eyes!! & his coloring also resembles to praying mantis bug! Like, Izam & Walt, Edison’s helmet also has his mouth uncovered but, out from all of Microman’s helmets, Edison’s helmet was probably the biggest one to be made, perhaps because of that large eyes… Honestly, his helmet can be cool but, with that 2 large eyes kinda turned me down, making him the very least favorite one to me… Edison was the brain of the team, he specialized in computers & inventing new weapons & rides, he’s the one who created the Spy Heli, Beatloader, Magne Animal, Zen-mine & Microstation. His character shows him being rational & think everything by logic, because of this he often had conflicts with Walt’s tactics in combat. Edison rarely get involved into combat since he’s the weakest one from all Micromans. Edison uses Lightning element for his power by using his Magne Stick.
5th, finally Odin, he wear jaguar styled helmet. Unlike Izam, Walt & Edison, his face is fully covered by the helmet, making all of his body fully covered & his helmet became more like the exact jaguar head. However, despite having his face fully covered but, Odin’s head is the smallest one from the others even from Arthur as well who do not wear any helmet. Odin is my 3rd favorite after Arthur, although I’m not a fan of tiger styled head… Odin is considered as the 3rd in command since I used to see him leading Edison & Walt sometimes Izam as well… He’s the calm gifted with extraordinary strength, he can even withstand giant door/gate to let his comrades run through the door/gate despite how microscopic he is. Odin uses Fire element as his power by using his Magnetic Arm to spit fire.
All Microman shares the exact body sculpt & mold, they even shares the same weapon, the only thing that differ them is the coloring & the head sculpt. However, what made them unique is they comes up with magnetic features on their feet, chest & left arm. Note that the left arm on these toys were mold in one piece with the magne weapon, & I have to agree as well that’s some disappointing part from these toys. Their knee appeared to be slightly bend but, that’s already the top of their knee joints, you cannot stretch them completely upright. Yeah, they looked awkward, like they’re not properly standing.
Because the magne weapon has the exact height size of the right arm, their left wrist appeared to be shrunk compare to the right wrist, you can see how small their left hand by the picture. Yes, this left arm is a major letdown for this line, as they became the bitter point with many fans.
The articulations are limited indeed but, for me it’s still fun to play. They got rotateable head, movable arms, legs & knee, rotateable shoulder, bicep & crotch, their right arm got movable elbow while the left one was completely solid piece. Their crotch articulation has some kind of press, which their legs can be pressed to do split position. The main lacking one is torso, feet & of course left arm, because of this they received poor reactions… Unfortunately, my Walt & Odin got limit on rotating their head, Walt is the worst one while others can still move their head easily. & if you wonder why they could stand with that high kick position because, I put a magnetic table to withstand their position.
The unique features given to these toys is their magnetic features located on their chest (S), left arm (S) & feet (Right N & Left S). With the magnetic features will give these toys alot of advantage to create many scenes without the need of stand display like SHF or Figma to make them standing or create various poses unless you wanna create floating scene. All you need is a magnetic table to maintain their pose or you can also use many variable magnetic tools to play them such as iron ruler, refrigerator, cloth hanger, etc. I like it, felt like the magnetic features make us creative on playing them. Unfortunately, the magnetic features still couldn’t help these line to go big success at that time.
COMPARISON BETWEEN SHF
Well, don’t even think these Microman toys can rival those full detailed articulated figure like SHF… Microman is only 8 cm tall while SHF is 13-14 cm tall, with this photo you can already tell how small Microman toys. However, Microman’s magnetic features gave lots of fun to play & that makes their material contains some kind of iron/metal, compare to SHF these day which only full plastic….
Final thoughts? Yeah, I agree I was slightly disappointed but, that was expected & my resolve is set for them. On the contrary, I had alot of fun time on photoshooting them! Especially with those magnetic features, really gave me lots of ideas to create many posing. However, eversince these series only received little success so, the toys did not sell quite much, what’s worse that Takara already produced them overstocked at that time & this also lead the anime to be discontinued because of the overbudget compare to the toy sales. Yes, not many Microman fans like this as far as I know in some forum & group, the series status now is also discontinued but, I can’t say they’re fully disappointing though. Guess, I’ll leave that to you to judge so, it’s your call… The reason I bought them is because the design of these Microman was stolen to be a local candy toy TVC, in Indonesia we call them as Kinoman. It’s a candy toy produced by PT. Kinosentra Industrindo, I used to know them in 2002 & the TVC didn’t even mention about Microman or even Takara co. So, at that time I don’t know anything about Microman, which is why Microman became a loose part of my childhood… I get to know Microman at the mid of 2015 when surfing more about my old Kinoman’s toys so, I’m practically still new on this line. & it is unknown whether PT. Kinosentra Industrindo got permission from Takara to use their Microman design or not. But, I’ll take it from the bright side, if I don’t know Kinoman then I will never know about Microman, same goes if there’s no Microman there will be no Kinoman.
- The toys got very nice details & gimmicks despite how small they are.
- For small toys, they’re still articulated relatively sturdy since I never experienced breaking them.
- The magnetic features was awesome! We can be creative enough playing with them.
- Nicely printed mini book.
- Lack of articulation on torso, left arm & feet.
- Knee joints are not pleasing enough because of the bend position when they’re standing.
- Magnets aren’t quite strong to maintain extreme pose.
- All 5 Microman was mostly recolor from 1 standard cast.
- Lack of accessoris, they could atleast make that magne weapon as their only accessories.
- The chrome head is easy to leave finger prints.
- Moving their head was a complete pain.
