Hi, guys! This post will be another late review of S.H.Figuarts figures, & it’s Ultimate Son Gohan from Dragon Ball Z series!! Son Gohan is known as the first son of the protagonist Goku, and his wife Chi-Chi, making him the first hybrid of Saiyan and Human. Gohan actually has the potential power even greater than his father since he has more human emotion. Ultimate Gohan powers was achieved by a stupid silly ceremony performed by Old Kaio-Shin. Although technically this ability is not exclusive to Gohan alone as the ceremony can be used to unlock anyone’s sleeping powers, his was unusual in the amount of time it took to unlock due to his amazing potential. Thanks to his potential unlock, his base form becomes much stronger – eclipsing that of Gotenks in equivalent forms – and thus his Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan 2 forms power up as well, with his Super Saiyan form’s appearance also altering slightly. Perhaps, this Gohan is the strongest form from all of his appearance in DBZ and actually making him the strongest non fused/absorbed character in Dragon Ball series. On to the review, Gohan’s box design is simillar to other Dragon Ball series boxes but, the dimension has the same size like Son Gokou Normal and other standard SHF figures. The box was printed with mostly light & regular blue coloring resembling Gohan’s blue undershirt, wrist bands and boots… Simple but, kinda eye catching. SHF Ultimate Son Gohan was released as another Tamashii Webshouten exclusive from Bandai so, he also was included with brown case. I guess… Since this Gohan was a complete headswap from Goku’s body… Bandai wants him to be like another Goku’s exclusive release. Which really upset me the most of what they’ve done to my most favorite character form. And like the previous releases, Gohan was also included with lots of accessories that is fitting to his portrayal in the anime.
Ultimate Son Gohan comes with 2 alternate faceplates, Ki Blast FX, 4 pair of hand accessories, Stage Act Display Stand & 2 variant faceplates.
Ultimate Son Gohan wear the same outfit like his father & originally the actual figure had the same color like Goku Normal’s body which was plain bright orange & blue. However, the anime shows him having different coloring than Goku, & this review will be showing the repainted version of the figure. This Gohan also got repaint treatment from a friend of mine Cluster Model Kit, having darker tone of orange to red-ish gi, dark blue undershirt, wrist bands & boots. Apparently, I’m not the only one who was displeased by his complete headswap of Goku’s same outfit color & some customizer of Dragon Ball collectors tried to repaint his outfit with orange red-ish and dark blue as well. But, since people already did it before me… So, I want some differences by adding weathering effects on his outfit which shows realistic color, weathering effects was referenced from VKH resin figure featuring Ultimate Son Gohan VS Super Buu. Once again, my friend did another awesome job on repainting him!! Gohan looks so very realistic like that resin figure!! Anyway, since this Gohan uses the same body mold of Goku so, I’m going to skip talking about how the body works.. If you want more informations of his body feel free to check my Son Gokou Normal review. Bandai did it again to show how lazy they are by completely ignoring Gohan’s actual physical looks. The actual figure color was actually based from his manga counterpart.
Unlike his Normal form, Ultimate Gohan has some differences, having more pronounced facial features including narrowed eyes and a serious look, more upright hair similar to SSJ2. His head was actually more like a recolor of his SSJ form but, personally I like black hair better than goldilocks. Gohan was included 3 faceplates in total. Gohan’s primary faceplate is a standard serious face which already attached to his head from the box. 2nd was a yelling expression which used during his battle/action. & 3rd was his famous smirk expression with his eyes looking sharper, this is to recreate how confident he is to kill Super Buu. Gohan’s overall hair is also shown stands upwards but, shorter than Vegetto & he only have 1 bangs. Gohan actually shares Goku’s trait having pure hearted soul and also has cheerful face but, not in this form as he’s shown full serious tough guy. The only thing bugged me that Gohan has a bit too protruding forehead but, I think that’s only from a certain angle. Anyway, not to be confused make sure you put his faceplate on the lower 2 holes because, the upper 2 holes one is for his bangs. Both bangs & faceplate’s 2 holes are identical, you can even attach his faceplate on the upper holes.
Gohan’s face looks quite close to his show & even manga counterpart but, the different is he lacks some face wrinkle detailings but, that’s not a problem for me. This Gohan’s smirking faceplate was indeed strongly based from these anime shot and manga art, eventhough he lacks some face detailing but, Bandai still captures his expression perfectly. And by comparing between the show and manga, Gohan got a large neck compare to his SHF counterpart. Well, I’m actually glad that SHF didn’t tried to make that large neck because I’m not fond with that humongous neck… Also, In the show Gohan has red-ish gi & dark blue colored undershirt as well as his wristbands & boots.
Since Gohan’s hair are straight upright so, in every angle Gohan looks fine as well. Overall proportion, Gohan got the same body mold of Goku so, there is nothing new at all. He’s just another Goku figure with different head sculpt & accessories except, this Gohan’s gi was repainted in dark orange & dark blue with weathering effects like VKH resin figure. Yeah, I know it’s not show accurate, which is why I call this “Custom Color” version instead of “Original Anime Color” or whatever they call it. Once again, my friend put up another intense work on repainting Gohan’s gi, he didn’t missed anything including how the weathering effects was added, especially on his pants since Goku body’s pants has lots of fabric sculpt, everything was repainted smoothly on the outfit but, his flesh body remains the same. Unfortunately, some of his flesh body has paint transfer, mostly on the shoulders & wrist’s joint because they’re directly attached to his outfit like shoulder pad & wrist bands. But, it’s not like a big burden to me since they’re less visible.
Once again I’m going to skip this, I had enough on discussing another SHF Goku body. But, there’s some flaw on my Gohan’s left crotch articulation as I couldn’t move wide his left leg further like the right leg.
Ultimate Gohan comes with a lifeless Ki Blast FX part and his exclusive stage act to attach the FX. It is a 2 connected sphere-shaped energy wave technique & it’s a little heavy. Unlike Vegetto’s Ki Blade, Ki Blast is only attachable in the stage act’s 3 jointed pole but, the existence of this accessory you can create many desirable moves you want that has simillar form of this FX. Such as small Kamehameha or even one of Gohan’s technique Masenko. If you have stage act vol. 04 you can also attach one of the claw in this stage act to recreate Gohan’s various action pose, because Gohan’s stage act is the exact copy of the one in stage act vol. o4 even the stand still retains “Bandai 2010 Made in China” print.
Gohan was included with the exact optional hand accessories like Goku Normal has, & that will be… Fistful hands as default hands from the figure, the alternates consists 2 chop hands, 2 open splayed hands for recreating scenes like Kamehameha or Ki Blast, 2 open wide finger hands for like shooting alternate way of Ki Blast or maybe to recreate Masenko attack & lastly 2 open gesturing 2 fingers for every DB character’s notable stance scene. In overall, this is Goku’s hands but, the exception of chop hands having new mold. Nah, nothing to say more… The majority of Gohan’s hands are used to recreate his battle with Super Buu.
Gohan’s body was a complete reused of Goku’s body, they both looked the same in height comparison. So, they looked the same. This is inaccurate as I used to see Gohan was a bit taller than Goku. I really wished this Gohan gets a new body in a new fashioned joint but, that wish didn’t came true… Maybe someday will on their next stupid renewal! Anyway, I have to say Goku also looking good with the repainted outfit!
Nothing’s much different between their hands but, Goku Normal has paler skin tone than Gohan which a bit yellow-ish. Lastly, Goku’s chop hand are slightly larger than Gohan one, which is the only differences I noticed aside their head….
Really? At first I’m not happy at all when getting this on the first time but, it’s Ultimate Gohan, my favorite character in DBZ series… Fortunately, my friend actually cured me by his realistic repaint of Gohan! Just like Vegetto, what makes Gohan’s special is only because of his head & his FX. But, he’s still a recycled figure from the existing releases of Goku, since he got old fashioned body mold. Frankly, I’m getting sick of this body, Bandai really need to change this body into a new one. However, if you’re an fan of Dragon Ball series or Ultimate Gohan, this figure is still considered as one of the best existing Ultimate Gohan figure. However, since this Gohan is a complete headswap, the figure’s price are currently dropped, I can see why and I’m positive this figure will be even dropped if the Renewal really happened.
