For a long time I know I’ve been delaying on reviewing figures due to another things to do but… Better than never I’ll review my S.H.Figuarts Ridelone & also my Custom Kamen Rider BLACK RX! The Ridron is a high-speed Rider Machine car created by Kotaro Minami based on the blueprints given to him by Professor Walter, a scientist in one of the colonies the Crisis Empire set up. Ridron became Kamen Rider BLACK RX’s second Rider Machine after Acrobatter & the first Kamen Rider series in history to use car, the 2nd one would be Kamen Rider Drive’s Tridron & 3rd Kamen Rider Sango’s Tricyclone, although it was supposed to be the first before RX because of the time altering. As for Custom Kamen Rider BLACK RX, he’s just the same SHF Kamen Rider BLACK RX Renewal I used to review but, he had a repaint treatment thanks to my friend Cluster Model Kit but, most review will be focussing on Ridron. SHF Ridron was packaged by large red colored box fashioned like other Kamen Rider BLACK Renewal series & surprisingly Ridron is a regular release but, despite being regular the box was designed to be windowless. Frankly, it pisses me off because I never been a fan of windowless box & I never expect I had a bad issues on my Ridron on the first time I opened it. However, that issues was eventually solved now so, I don’t give a damn anymore. About RX custom, the box is the exact same one like in my RX Renewal review but, signed by Tetsuo Kurata! XD Now, shall see what’s inside the Ridron’s box!
Yup, despite having huge box, Ridron only comes up with the main figure because Ridron’s size is godlessly huge & 2 antennas as it’s accessories. I’m not including RX’s accessories eversince he’s the same RX that I used to review but, only he got repaint treatment.
Ridron’s only separated part is only pair of antennas which must be plugged onto the 2 hole joints above the center spiky fin of the car. Originally, my Ridron’s antennas had a little defects which both has different height but, this was finally solved by having the spare part from Multi Toys store. If you want to know the story of the antennas you can read it in here.
In the series production, Ridron was built by Mazda, an automobile company in Japan, and the car seems to be based on a 1st generation Mazda RX-7. Kamen Rider BLACK RX is the only Showa Kamen Rider to have a car. For a Rider Machine, Ridron is highly intelligent and can speak, the miniature car was designed to have a grasshopper feel, you can tell by it’s window resembling eyes, spiky fin that resembling Grasshopper’s spikes & lastly, the 2 antennas. The main body color was overally painted full glossy red color with 2 black stripes, silver colored upper fin also on the front & back of top body & under the back fin, small yellow color on the back fin, while the lower one to the chassis was entirely black. Also, not forgetting it’s white colored RX logo representing Kamen Rider BLACK RX’s signature symbol. The majority of Ridron’s material was made from plastic & probably with some diecast inside the body but, whatever it is this thing is incredibly heavy for a plastic figure!!
Not much is different from BLACK RX’s since he only got repaint treatment to make him have more realistic looks. But, the coloring was actually referenced from DXF Kamen Rider BLACK RX where RX’s green armor was painted with shading & some weathering. If you want an actual review of this RX you can check on my review here. This review will be mainly focussing on Ridron & RX’s repainted version.
RX’s change on the head are the repainted mouth to have silver color & center line referenced from his original or even his later helmet design although, the latest original helmet has a little changes on his eyes. Actually, there is no plan for the line change on the begining but, a friend of mine whose an avid fan of Kamen Rider BLACK series encouraged me to make a repaint of this.
Now, here’s the main reason of why I call him Custom Color instead of Original TV Color! This RX wasn’t painted simply dark green like in the show of other people did but, my friend repaint him with shade of dark green with black to make him have more dramatic realistic green color feel. Actually, the color was loosely referenced from Banpresto’s Dual Solid Heroes Figure DXF Kamen Rider BLACK RX which RX has the exact color scheme like my Custom Color RX but, slightly different. Why we did this, is because once again I want to make something different from what people did. You know, if I did the same thing & the review would feel like just another figure repainted dark green only. I’ve seen 1 or 2 review of this RX repainted simple dark green color.
Everything on Ridron’s body design was made symetrical, you can see both side looked perfect even the “RX” logo on the door was present on him (since the voice was male) and the paintjob was also done pretty nice so far. However, this car wasn’t considered as the first car that was made from S.H.Figuarts line as they already did Itasha Robo and Tridron, both of these cars appeared to have many interesting features and gimmicks. While Ridron, you can’t really find something interesting except that meticulous itsy bitsy details but, it’s still a brilliant made from Bandai. I have to say, by looking on the details of the car himself is incredibly marvelous and they also captures the real car perfectly! Very accurate looking body sculpt, lines, holes, wheels, velg, chassis & 4 fan on the back. The car was fully articulated as well, you can move forward or backward & while you move it, you may hear fan noises. This is from the 4 fan on the back, which they’re movable whenever we move the car.
Ridron’s antennas are also movable, you can make them wide open & stand straight upward or anything you wish to create. Now, this is very important before opening the doors, you must move them straight upward first otherwise the wide open antennas would block your way from opening the doors.
To open or close Ridron’s doors was a bit tricky, when opening them you’ll have to open it in certain area where the door was locked by a hidden joint, pull it up & open it. To close the door, before pushing the door joint you’ll have to move forward the door to the front body then you may push to snap it. Don’t forget to mind the antennas before opening the doors.
When in opened position, you’ll be able to see the interior which is real superb on the details they paid attention. You can clearly sees 2 brown seats, dashboard, steering wheel, pedals, handbrake, navigator, shifting gear, line floor & many more! judging by the shifting gear, the car is a manual ride. Since the handbrake lever was in engaged position, the car was supposed to be immobile but, this is a toy so no one really cares about it. Actually, this is the first time I saw Ridron’s interior, because in the series or even the latest movie Super Taisen GP there are no specific scene of Ridron’s full interior. All we get to see is either Kotaro or RX in close up view which was filmed inside activating/driving Ridron.
Of course, it won’t be perfect without RX inside Ridron! You can make various posing for RX inside the car, like in my pictures above or maybe other things you wish to recreate but, you cannot make RX’s right feet step on the gas pedal since his thighs movements are limited. Aside mysterious interior in the series, this is also the first time I get to see RX driving Ridron in full body. When the door closed I hardly able to see RX inside the car because the window is semi transcluent black, even in the series I almost can’t see RX inside Ridron at all. However, RX don’t actually need to drive it since Ridron was an auto driver. Also, RX antennas can be a problem when closing the door, make sure you make a good pose for him to fit the door closed.
Another of Ridron’s articulations are movable front wheels & the movements was connected to where we spin steering gear, so you can make the scene more convincing like real life driving.
Aside able to reach speeds up to 1500 km & travel over land and sea, Ridron also has two extendable mandibles on the front used to smash obstacles or ram into enemies. Just like the figure has them too to recreate Ridron in action, to open the mandibles push the button that hidden on the front spiky fin. By pushing the button the mandibles will automatically extend to the front, & to close them just pull the pincher’s back. Perhaps, this is the only gimmick that SHF Ridron has, I really wished they could do more like lights on, sound or something else….
As far as I know, we never get to see Robo Rider or even Bio Rider inside but, both of them once ride Ridron. Since Robo & Bio are actually RX’s multiple transformations, it is possible they’ll also drive Ridron in certain conditions. Due to both Riders got bright color design they’re more visible inside those window compare to RX.
Well, Ridron was included with extra seat for passenger, you can use any 1:12 articulated figure or smaller to make them seat in the extra seat. I’m using Figma Nene as a passenger, & the seat was perfectly fit for her. it was nice from Bandai for paying attention of this too, because it’s going to be boring if RX is the only person who can ride Ridron.
If RX Renewal can ride Ridron so does the Old RX as well, even easier & nothing to worry about his antennas eversince Old RX antennas was made from soft material.
COMPARISON BETWEEN THE ORIGINAL VERSION
Between the original version, Ridron’s looks can be vary in certain scenes in original series during normal scene where the Ridron was stand still, the real car prop was used. In action or sea scenes, the miniature of Ridron was used instead of real prop, as you can see there’s some different shape & coloring between 2 footage, while in Super Taisen GP, a CGI of Ridron was used. Now, judging by the SHF version, the design are mainly based from the real prop but, there’s a slight differences on the mandibles which the original has darker color tone on the center of the pinchers. While SHF one was left plain silver like Super Taisen GP version, as for the feature the real Ridron’s front roof can be opened to reveal the machines while SHF doesn’t. Lastly, for the interior there is no specific details of Ridron’s actual interior except close up view of Kotaro or RX driving the car but, I can still assumed it was based from Ridron’s actual prop. Because, there is one part of the navigator or something that was referenced to SHF, while the rest we’ll never know… But, comparing between SHF, both Original or Super Taisen GP version had different the back interior which shows many machines/gears like while SHF was made plain glossy black.
So far, I’m quite enjoying this miniature car, it’s another typical solid work of Bandai Tamashii Nations. Although, it could be better if Ridron has more gimmicks and features judging from his large & heavy size, just like Tridron which has light feature & some other interesting stuffs. But, I understand that Ridron wasn’t a car that has much features to do like Tridron but, more feature would make this figure more worth judging how expensive he was… But, I still recommend this for all Kamen Rider BLACK series fans or car lover and the good thing is Ridron’s price is currently dropped so, you still have your chance on getting this easily. It was a big regret for me to preorder this car, if I know the price will dropped drastically I’d never make a preorder but… What’s done is done, let’s take it from the bright side by having this car, my long awaited wishlists to complete SHF Kamen Rider BLACK series figures are almost done! But, I’m positive Bandai will be creating SHF Kotaro Minami or even Shinkocchou Seihou Kamen Rider BLACK someday, since they already did SHF Takeshi Hongo and SS Shin Ichigo… Once again, if there is no exclusive release of that crappy Saban’s Masked Rider franchise on RX with his forms & other machines so, neither Ridron as well. However, if they really did Bandai must add exclusive feature for Magno, which a transformation that allows Ridron to change into a funny looking bug form. But, I have to admit… If Ridron was given transformation feature, it would make this Ridron feels like SHF Itasha Robo. In the original BLACK RX series Ridron was a car created by Kotaro instead of a living things. One last thing, until now I never understand what’s the meaning of “RX” and it doesn’t explain as well in the series but, by knowing of Ridron was based from Mazda RX first generation. I think there’s a strong possibility that “RX” name represents Ridron’s base car, and since BLACK RX is the very first Rider to have a car in Kamen Rider history. But, it’s just my personal guess, though….
