Another long time wishlist came true! Here, I’m going to review Bandai DD Panoramation: Sagittarius Aiolos! Although, I never get to see Aiolos when I was a kid but, I mostly saw gold saint armor used by Seiya in some anime and manga. Also, I’m a Sagittarius so, it makes me even more interested getting him! Aiolos is one of the 12 Guardians of Sanctuary, with the Sagittarius as his destined constellation. Aiolos is the famous Gold Saint who died protecting Athena when she was an infant… Talk about noble hero, it’s a sweet protection! Not much is known about Aiolos, since he died before the main story began but despite his condition, Aiolos managed to help the main characters many times sending his cloth to aid them. Most notably is when he lend his cloth to Seiya, making him to become Sagittarius Seiya! Okay, that’s it for the character introduction let’s straight to the review! Sagittarius Aiolos box is even bigger than Pegasus Seiya’s box, and it has simillar design and layout except there is no Saint Seiya 30th anniversary sticker. Well, another windowless box but, Aiolos is a standard release and the box features many DDP figures even some unreleased one like Cygnus Hyoga and Shun for recreating some scenes where the saints reads Aiolos message. However, the most important one is Capricorn Shura which you’ll have to buy him to recreate Aiolos VS Shura scenes. Hmm… Not that interested and I can make another character to replace Shura… Alright, let’s check what’s inside the box!
Aside instruction manual, Sagittarius Aiolos also given with full colored booklet featuring many Saint Seiya figures, the cover one shows most of DDP products, while the inside shows SCM EX line.
Aiolos comes up with 1 alternate hair fringe, 2 alternate faceplates, Seiya’s head with 1 alternate faceplate and fringe, 2 stand display, 2 baby Athena/Saori Kido, 1 bow with 1 arrow, 1 stairs, 1 gate roof, Aiolos message wall, 2 pair of hands and 5 preassembled Dioramas. Whoaa… Very nice and convenient accessories!!
Aiolos armor are entirely painted in gold chrome color, he’s even shinier than Pegasus Seiya! The shiny gold are vary in certain area, his armor consists tiara crown, shoulder pads, chestplate, gauntlets, belt skirt, long thigh bands, long boots and a pair of wings on the back. Without his armor, Aiolos wear plain dull red jumpsuit but, the red suit are only visible on the back since his armor dominates his front looks. I’m guessing the red suit was meant to synchronize Seiya’s red suit from his Pegasus cloth version but, the red is slightly different. Aiolos got approximately 20 points of articulations including his articulated wings and the figure stands 10 cm tall. The whole figure is made from PVC plastic, no diecast included at all but, so far his material is still sturdy enough but, I still have to watch my back on handling him.
Aiolos is a Greek, he has light brown gray-ish spiky side hairstyle simillar to Seiya one but, longer to his lower neck. His irises are green colored and he has his tiara shaped like wings on both sides covered to his cheeks and sharp tip on the center despite the small size, the tiara is still given with well detailed line sculpt representing how the actual tiara in the anime. He is also given with alternate faceplates even richer than Pegasus Seiya, it consists his main standard serious expression as his default one, serious expression with eyes looking to the left to recreate his scene when aiming his arrow and yelling expression to recreate his battle scenes more intense. Exchanging his faceplate is pretty much the same way like Pegasus Seiya’s alternate head (no helmet) by simply removing his fringe temporarily and replace his faceplate with alternate face part you wish to exchange then reattach his fringe but, note that his faces has different type of joint to attach them so they can be little tricky to deal with. You can also replace his fringe with his alternate fringe which has no hole joint to recreate him without tiara, not only that his tiara crown is also removable for the purpose of Seiya’s alternate fringe. That’s right! He’s also included with Seiya’s head to recreate Sagittarius Seiya. Yeah, we’re having 2 characters in 1 figure. Seiya’s head is different than his Pegasus Seiya’s alternate head, the hairstyle has different angle which his spiky side hair was on the other side following his default faceplate with his eyes looking to the left when aiming his arrow. Seiya’s head was only given 2 faceplates in total, his default one is the serious expression with eyes looking to the left and the alternate one is yelling expression. Yeah, right… For simillar purpose as Aiolos himself but, it’s Seiya lol but, still… Wished he’d also given with standard serious faceplate as well like Aiolos default faceplate. But, wait? Can we actually use Pegasus Seiya’s faceplate?! Yes, but the result is… I’ll show you below… Seiya’s faceplates also got different joint even also different from Aiolos one, you can see the peg shape of their back plates were positioned differently and Aiolos face has a little longer shape with sharp chin than Seiya’s rounder face so, I don’t think their faces can be swap together. This Aiolos was referenced from his anime counterpart (latest version I think) which his hair was brown color while in manga he’s blonde. While his eyes… He actually has dark hazel colored irises while DDP is green so… Yeah, maybe people noticed this small differences and not fond with the color but, it doesn’t bother me much. Unlike Pegasus Seiya, both Aiolos face were pretty much faithful enough like his promotional pictures, except his irises. Seiya’s head also looking a lot better than his previous release, I’m so glad they didn’t reuse the Pegasus Seiya’s alternate head. I guess they slightly learned their lessons from the bad response of their Pegasus Seiya. The paintjob of their faces are quite messy, as expected from Bandai as always… Never fail to disappoint me again. In overall, they still bear some big differences to their anime counterpart but, for me this time Bandai did it better than Pegasus Seiya. I’m happy for it, it’s still a decent made for a 10 cm figure. And one more thing to notice that both there’s a hollow on each Aiolos and Seiya’s forhead, which I’m not quite fond with that hollow thing… although, they’re barely visible with their fringe attached.
Aiolos is looking great so far, since he has the same proportions as Seiya. Unlike Pegasus Seiya, Aiolos wear full armored gold colored cloth that almost covered his body except his bicep, the cloth got many meticulous sculpted line details and they got many sharp tip especially on his wings so, be extra careful from being hurt yourself or damaging them as they also seemed fragile and breakable. They still using the same ball joints on the elbows & knees but, thanks to the gold cloth his joints are more hideable. However, Aiolos torso appeared to be a bit slimmer than Pegasus Seiya and since his torso was fully covered by his gold cloth so, he has no fabric sculpt of his jumpsuit. Like all DDP releases, Aiolos armor are not removable except his tiara. Paint works are even better than Pegasus Seiya I think but, I believe there is some certain mistake in certain part I haven’t spot yet. Unfortunately, they still repeat the same mistake for the difference of his hands and feets to have doff gold instead of chrome, also his neck is freak’n long….
His wings got double jointed articulations that allows him to spread the wings like a bird, you can even spread the wings higher.
Aiolos shoulder pads are also movable but, they suffers limitation due to their large size and the hinge doesn’t have extra joint for lifting his shoulder pads like Seiya although, that feature is unnecessary to add.
Aiolos also got rotateable head 360 degrees but, due to his shoulder pads there are limitations on the movements.
Unlike Pegasus Seiya, Aiolos can’t even bend down his waist.
We can still swivel his waist 360 degrees but, we couldn’t bend his torso to the side at all.
His arm’s articulations works exactly the same like Pegasus Seiya so, to create crossed arm pose is simple but, since his wrists has no ball jointed articulations I cannot make his hands posed perfectly accurate. Since they worked the same, I have nothing to say more. Anyway, the wings can be flap as well.
The same as Pegasus Seiya, his articulations are quite limited on the elbows, knees and thighs but, we can still create several dynamic pose. Unfortunately, his gold cloth obstacled his leg movements, you can’t even raise his back skirt since it’s unarticulated to make his leg posing more dynamic. He can still raise his leg a little and bend his knees but, Aiolos also lacks toe articulations.
You can also twist his feet to the side a little.
Aiolos can still do gymnastic split pose but, not dynamic as Pegasus Seiya one. He can raise his arms to the side higher too. Recreating high kick pose is still can but, not vast enough.
Yes, the only physical Sagittarius Aiolos/Seiya’s weapon is none other than their Sagittarius golden bow and arrow. Perhaps, Aiolos is one of the only gold saints who possessed weapon, other than him was Libra Dohko. The weapon consist removable half of the bow and the pointy arrow, the purpose of removable bow is to make Aiolos/Seiya holding the bow which you’ll have to use one of the option hand that is attachable to the bow’s handler then reattach the half part of the bow. The arrow feathers has peg joint to allow Aiolos/Seiya hold it with one of the option hand for attaching it. The removable pointy arrow is to recreate the famous Aiolos message wall for Seiya and the others read it or you can make for any other purposes. The weapon was painted mostly chrome gold and shiny yellow on the arrow stick, details of the bow has some sculpted lines and not forgetting the lines on back arrow feathers. Yeah, looks pretty nice indeed although the bow lacks the string to make Aiolos/Seiya aim to shoot the arrow but, It’s understandable enough why they didn’t include that, because the string would be a real hard to deal.
Aside Sagittarius Arrow, Aiolos was also included with baby Athena to recreate his famous scenes of protecting/carrying her away from Ares/Pope Saga and his henchmens, especially Gold Saint Capricorn Shura which his DDP already been released but, I don’t dig to get mine. Baby Athena was given 2 kinds of figures which her crawling/ducking pose and with white fabric protection, the figures was done splendidly despite the micro size she’s faithfully made like her anime counterpart! Just look at her adorable eyes, laugh and that innocent expression! I think she’s better made than Aiolos face himself although, she lacks some detailings like the sculpted laugh mouth was left unpainted and the inaccurate barefeet, in the anime her feet was fully covered by her baby suit but, it’s not that necessary though. Athena’s suit was painted pink and her hair was light purple. With her fabric protection we can make Aiolos carry her but, honestly making him carrying Athena properly was a real pain in the arse as he doesn’t have any swivable wrist joint so, it’s awkward to see his hand couldn’t hold her properly. As for crawling pose was meant to recreate how she crawls around to Capricorn Shura, when Aiolos unaware she’s not present in her fabric protection after he attacked Shura.
Aiolos is given with 3 pair of hands in total, like Pegasus Seiya the one out of the box he’s already got his fistful hands attached to his wrists. For the alternate one, he was included 1 pair of open splayed hands to recreate many purposes, especially for carrying baby Athena for Aiolos. The last is 1 fistful right hand with hole to attach arrow feathers and 1 pointy finger with hole for attaching his bow weapon, I guess it’s clear enough to tell what are they for. Like Pegasus Seiya, Aiolos glove hands are molded/painted in doff gold color while his fingers was painted pale skin color.
Of course, Sagittarius Aiolos also comes up with his own respective diorama to recreate his scenes more intense or you wanna display them. The diorama consists 2 display base (small and large), 5 preassembled pillars and joints, to assemble them you can read on the instruction manual given. It’s very easy to assemble them, you don’t even need to use any cutting tools to cut them, after you’re done you may attach them as you wish. The pillars and 1 small display stand are the exact diorama of Pegasus Seiya, the rests of the diorama is the gate roof of Sagittarius temple, you can just attach the roof with the assembled pillars, Aiolos wall message written “To you young boys who have reached this temple, know that I entrust Athena’s life in your hands. Aiolos.” in Hellenic, you just need to put it between 2 pillars attached which is funny that since there’s no attachment to hold that wall, making it easy to fall. The wall also has tiny hole to attach Sagittarius arrow on it, or you can also put the wall reversely without Sagittarius arrow. And last but, not least is small stairs to attach them with another display base, you can use the joint connector from the hole joint under the base/stairs. Don’t forget to attach several pillars on the upper base one to balance them. I’m liking the stand has a cracked floor sculpt & they got 4 peg joints for Seiya’s foot to be attached. You can also mix the base display with other DDP base display included to recreate sanctuary like. The details of the diorama is good enough but, to compare with anime… They’re completely inaccurate to the real anime Sagittarius temple but, they’re just meant for recreating epic scenes display from many Saint Seiya episodes.
COMPARISON AND HEAD/FACE SWAP
Comparing to Pegasus Seiya, Aiolos has the exact body build like Seiya. Yeah, everything looks pretty much the same of their height and it’s why they included Seiya’s head. Except for one thing…
PFFTT… Curse you Bandai… The alternate Sagittarius Seiya’s head is much smaller than the Pegasus Seiya one and the hair has darker tone, if the head is smaller so does his faceplates… So, his faceplates doesn’t fit to be attached into Pegasus Seiya’s alternate head and helmet… But, you can still face swap his face but, he looks awfully bloated… Looks like Seiya’s face got stung by lots of bees… However, both heads are swappable you can attach Seiya’s alternate head into Pegasus Seiya’s body, even Pegasus Seiya’s alternate head also attachable to Sagittarius Aiolos body.
Overall thoughts… I’m more satisfied with Sagittarius Aiolos/Seiya than Pegasus Seiya, Aiolos was packed with tons of nice accessories better than Pegasus Seiya. He was done exactly like in the promotional pictures! I really enjoyed myself playing this figure although, I have to admit it was tiring on dealing his accessories & even taking photoshoots of him. Once again, some people might still disagree with me but, that is understandable enough for me, because it’d be a different story if I used to collect SCM counterpart. Unlike Pegasus Seiya, I’d recommend this even better but, If you prefer perfection like in the anime counterpart, this might not your best option. On the contrary, if you’re looking for fun to play or likes to do many posing this is still my best recommendation. The price of this figures are currently dropping from what I saw in most online shops, my next plan would be Dragon Shiryu for Seiya’s rival.
DD Panoramation: Sagittarius Aiolos
- Materials are good enough & sculpt work is outstanding.
- Sculpt work was faithful enough like how the promotional photos depicted.
- Tons of accessories.
- Many removable parts.
- Diorama was fine enough for your display collections.
- User friendly on dealing the parts.
- Face dirt & some black spot.
- Price is still quite expensive for a 10 cm figure.
- Different color between hands & feets.
- Feels very cheap.
- Slight paintjob flaw but, tolerable.
