Here goes nothing… Today’s review is all about Embrace Japan: Athena from Athena/Neo Geo Battle Coliseum (NGBC) games! Athena also known as Goddess Athena or Princess Athena, is a character and main protagonist in the SNK arcade game Athena, which was later ported to several platforms. Athena is the rebellious princess of the Kingdom of Victory, which exists in a heavenly world. She is bored with the uneventful day-to-day life in the castle and yearns for exciting adventures. Athena had also appeared in several SNK Playmore’s fighting games like SNK VS Capcom: Chaos (SVC: Chaos) as 1 of the playable hidden boss and her latest appearance was in NGBC as a playable character. The figure was sculpted by Chilmiru and manufactured by Embrace Japan company, she was released in April 2014. Well, she’s relatively not that old but, her hype is getting lower from time to time due to her very rare appearance. The front box was designed to have ancient greek fashion style layout around her window box and the figure’s title as well as NGBC logo. Inside the box, there’s a blue colored inner tray with cloud’s background resembling sky or heaven accompanied with NGBC logo, while back box layout was entirely colored red with showing several of her promotional figure photos and her character bio written in Japanese. According to the box, the retail price of this product was 10800 yen, and the status is unknown whether she’s a standard or exclusive release. In overall, Athena’s box was colored dirty white and by looking on the window box, we can already tell what this figure comes up with.
The contents consists of Athena figure herself, 1 golden sword and a rocky base display. Other than that, the figure doesn’t have any cast-off material and there is no instruction manual for this figure but, not that necessarily needed.
To display her, you just basically need to attach her peg jointed feet into her rocky display holes and attaching her golden sword to her left hand. Yeah, it’s that easy, she’s not complicated as I did Mina Majikina figure. The flaw is when her feet was attached, the joint appeared to be loose so, when you try to move her to someplace else do not hold her figure only because the base display may easily fall. It is best that you hold the figure with the base together.
Now, Athena is fully assembled and ready to display anywhere you wish! Athena wears a red bikini and some several accessories. On her right arms, she wears red band with golden bracelet with 2 jades and red gloves alongside another bracelet and her shield, her left arms also has 2 bracelets but, she doesn’t wear any band or gloves. Athena’s lower bikini has 2 separated piece of strings on each sides, revealing her brief bare hips. And the right one has large red tie with a little gold and dark blue stripes. While her upper bikini has choker with tie on her neck. Athena is holding her golden sword with her left hand which surprised me to think that Athena is a left handed. The golden sword has 2 flags red and white and 2 pieces of jade like Athena’s bracelets. Personally, Golden Sword is not the right name since it doesn’t looked gold at all… And on her legs, she wears dark blue colored ancient Greek footwear sandals but, with some golden bracelets with white wings. While her left thigh, she wears 2 bands gold with dark blue and red one. Athena’s shield has sculpted lion shaped and the main shield was done with gold and dark yellow color while on her hand, the shield was dark brown. Her shield is unremovable as they’re glued onto Athena’s wrist… Athena also wears headband on her head. Athena’s pose is shown like she’s standing towards to the higher ground of her rocky display, the figure stands around 23 cms with the base display and she’s categorized as 1/8 scale painted figures. The entire figure was pre painted and made from PVC hard material with some soft one on certain part, and in overall quality she’s looking good, paintjob looks clean except I have to agree on what people complained on her weird toned toes.
Athena’s head sculpt was strongly based from her appearance in NGBC game, where she has more long straight long hair with 2 layered center fringe revealing her forehead, except her right bangs looks more prominent. In the original game of Athena, her bangs is fully covering her forehead like most Asian girl who has straight down fringe. Well, to think how small differences she was developed, I prefered her NGBC hairstyle better, it makes her looks original. Athena’s hair was painted purple with some white shade, and her golden headband has 2 hard feather like on the left and it was sculpted 1 piece with her hair. Her face expression is shown she’s making a gentle smile with her lips painted with gold colored lipstick, and below her eyes there are 2 white freckles. Athena supposed to be already living more than a hundred years old but, due to her godly nature, Athena does not age much and retains the maturity of a teenager: enthusiastic, self-centered, and moody. She shares some personality traits with Athena Asamiya, yet she appears to be more naive than the latter. Yes, in overall she’s another cute shoujo with large purple irises, her sculpt is quite good for a 1/8 scale figures and in terms of quality she’s alot better than Mina Majikina.
Her rocky display has several broken pillars although and so far looks good although, I’ve seen better than this….
COMPARISON BETWEEN NEO GEO BATTLE COLISEUM ARTWORK
Comparing to her artwork and portrait, the figure did truly referenced from her appearance in NGBC games mainly on her hairstyle but, there are some differences indeed. Especially on her headband, eyes and some color schemes but, it’s not really a big deal for me. She’s still looks like Athena so far….
BONUS: MORE PERVY SHOTS
As always for figures like this, more of pervy shots were included from me… Athena’s body building appeared to be a young girl with quite matured boobs seen on her cleavage, she looks younger than my Kotobukiya Mina Majikina but, Athena’s bikini didn’t shows her protruding nipples. None of Athena’s clothing can be taken off since she’s completely a stand alone figure. The only thing cast off are only her separated golden sword and base display. Athena’s abs and belly button are looking quite different than any other unarticulated figures I’ve saw, and the shading is a little awkward… Personally, I’m not really fond on how Athena’s belly button was made like that. Although, there are no protruding nipples, Athena’s butt still shows some intense cleavage. Fighting with bikini? Well, most male opponents would be distracted much unless if she’s facing a girl, fag or even a stoic person.
Since both are considered as 1/8 scale figures, both figures was made almost same on their size but, Athena is a little larger than Mina mainly because of the different posing. However, when I pick Mina and put her close to Athena both looked pretty much the same on their heads but, Athena has larger abs compare to Mina.
Quite a different thoughts, I’m satisfied with this… Atleast, 4000 yen for unopened figure was worth enough! Although, there’s still some disappointing flaw, it’s not surprising as well that her price dropped quite drastically. Athena has already lost her popularity long time ago. Thanks for that, it became big opportunity to me to get her in cheap prices, when she was released back in 2014 her actual prices discouraged me to buy her but, now it’s a different story. Athena has been my favorite SNK gal in SVC game so her charms made me bought her. Pretty much the same as I bought Mina Majikina lol but, still… I really wished for a proper action figure of Athena as well… As for recommended or not, If you’re a fan of SNK gals or maybe Athena game fan… This figure still worth to buy at this time since it’s getting cheaper. However, if you’re a fetishes then this figure won’t be my good recommendation, she’s not something special for an ecchi figure.
- Good sculpt work.
- Good for displaying the figure in the cabinet or detolf.
- Nice window box.
- Some paintjob problem like misspaint & paint transfer but, not a big problem to me.
- Bad quality on certain part especially on her toes and some awkward shading.
- Nothing really special from this figure.
- No cast-off parts aside Golden Sword and base display.
