More of Microman toy line review is here! Now, featuring the Acro-Change Troopers! The Acro-Change Troopers were the Acroyear counterparts of the Change Troopers. Unlike the Microman Change Troopers which transformed into vehicles, the Acro-Change Trooper had mechanical appearance but turn into snake and insects when transformed. There are 3 of Acro-Change Troopers in this series, they are Cob-Rage, Hell Pinch and Chain Spider. Unfortunately, this review will only discussed Cob-Rage and Chain Spider since I have no luck on getting Hell Pinch. Cob-Rage can transform into Snake Mecha and he’s a personal henchmen of Demon Red and Arden Purple while Chain Spider transform into Spider Mecha and a personal henchmen of Demon Blue and Arden Dark. Unlike Demon Acroyear, Acro-Change Troopers were depicted as joke villain characters as they’ve always shows some funny action and looks, due to their revealing expressions in the anime. But, the toys will tell differently as they looked nowhere funny like in the anime. Like the Micromans and the Demon Acroyears, the Acro-Change Troopers was also packaged with their own blister card with the same design of card but, different product number and the back card features the actual product’s photos and how to play them. Okay, unboxing time!
The Acro-Change Troopers comes up with their own toy and 1 each separate part of their weapons/transformations. Not forgetting the mini book & a card. From left to right: Cob-Rage & Chain Spider. If you wish to see what’s inside the book you can visit my 5 Microman Magne Powers review.
The Change Troopers were basically transformable toys along the same concept as the Micro Robot from the 1980’s New Microman series. The toyline features any objects around us that transformable into robot but, wait a minute? Is this Transformers?! Yes, you can say it like that but, the origins of Transformers were based from Microman named Micro Change. Back in 1984 Hasbro bought the license of Micro Change and Diaclone and make their own popular franchise called “Transformers” as we know today. Okay, let’s head back to the toys back, you can either transform them into their snake/insect robot or their own robot mode. The separated piece works for part of their transformations counterpart or acts as their weapons. In their robot form, they stand for 9 cm tall like Demon Acroyears and they also articulated but, limited in some part. They’re also made from a clear plastic on their snake/insect part, while the rest are completely solid plastic except their heads. Not forgetting that they also included with magnets to recreate many various unique posing scenes. Unlike the Demon Acroyears, the Change Troopers features different sculpt work on their clear plastic part and their heads, whereas their body has the same build. But, depending on their snake/insect mecha counterpart, some may looked slim and some also broad. Also, they got humanoid hands in gripping position since there’s 1 hole on each hands to make them hold their separated part to become their weapon. Each separated part has 2 different kinds of joints, which allows us to attach them on the back for snake/insect mecha form or for holding in their hands as their weapon.
Like the Micromans, The Acro-Change Troopers has their head also colored in chrome style & they got their own variant head sculpt. Starting from Cob-Rage, his head resembles cobra shaped head, we can tell the upper 2 protruding parts depicts as cobra’s eyes while his 2 side head as cobra’s iconic scales. The quality is pretty decent and once again sculpted really nice! However, if to compare to the anime, the toy is nothing alike since he has different shaped head, the toy depicted him to have more meaner looks while the anime has lighter tone. Cob-Rage is the first Acro-Change Trooper that was introduced in the 1st episode of the anime, at first he’s shown to be careless on doing his job but, he gets meaner when he transformed into his snake mecha form. Unfortunately, he was beaten by Arthur’s Super Magnetic Break. In the later episodes, Cob-Rage along with his other fellow acted more like a joke character till the end of the anime. The Acro-Change Troopers are the only survivors of the remaining Acroyears, they actually still active during LED series.
The same goes to Chain Spider but, he has fin/horn like on his head and he has much meaner looks compare to Cob-Rage. Frankly, those evil eyes really tells alot to me lol… Chain Spider’s head did not resembles to spider shaped looks, instead… That fin/horn actually made him somehow looked like a chicken’s comb from the side. Even the anime depicts his head having some comb like a chicken too. Pretty much like Cob-Rage, Chain Spider’s face also looked very different and made to be lighter and ridiculously funny for childrens. Despite this, Chain Spider works much deadly than Cob-Rage, as he could spread web bigger than he looks even made it to web many adult humans. But, once again beaten by Arthur, after his first appearance Chain Spider with his fellow Acro-Change Troopers also acted as a joke character till the end of the anime.
Cob-Rage actually looking pretty good although his chest piece and back body shows many big gap and his head looked shrink, we can barely see his head on the side and back due to his large collar like. His robot body was colored solid glossy black and his clear plastic part was colored blue and shaped cobra snake. When transformed into cobra form, his chest piece acted as a tail while his back acted as his head. Too bad Takara missed on making a feature to hide those visible arms and legs, he does looked a bit awkward and couldn’t stand really well. His cobra head has some salmon colored line and his lower mouth was articulated, to create open/closed mouth or make him bite the Micromans. Gotta admit that head looks cheap but, somehow I still kinda like it…
The same to Chain Spider, he was made using the same body build like Cob-Rage only was colored solid dark glossy green while his clear plastic part was colored blue and shaped spider insect. Unlike Cob-Rage, when Chain Spider transformed into his spider form, his chest piece acted as his spider head with 2 legs, while his back acted as his lower body with 6 legs. Although Takara missed on making a feature to hide those visible arms and legs, his 8 legs actually able to make his mecha arms and legs looked less visible but, he still couldn’t stand really well. His clear parts also has some salmon painted lines, his spider eyes was painted green and there are 2 painted circular silver on his pinch like. Frankly… He looks a bit better than Cob-Rage although his robot form made him looked broad with that separated part. However, I have to admit he does a little creepy when he’s in Spider mecha form.
Each of their bottom view has 1 metal circular joint for attaching them into Acro-Monster’s part, atm I don’t have Acro-Monster so I can’t do the experiment for attaching them for photo purposes.
The Acro-Change Trooper’s articulations works pretty simillar like Demon Acroyears since most of them uses ball joints but, they’re pretty limited on their shoulder articulations which we cannot bend them to the side. However, their legs can move better than Demon Acroyears and we can create any dynamic movements like running, split and also sitting. Unfortunately, I’m having quite a problem handling Chain Spider’s shoulders which is very hard to move compare to Cob-Rage one. Luckily, I didn’t break them despite the power I used to force the movement.
Cob-rage also got some magnetic piece (N) on his chest (mecha form) or tail (cobra mecha form), the purposes may vary whether you want to make him stick on any magnetic objects or maybe for fighting the Micromans or… You can also make Demon Acroyears ride him.
Both Cob-Rage and Chain Spider also got magnetic feet (N) but, only on their right feet but, it’s more than enough to balance their standing.. Actually, I’m having problem during posing their standing position with the separated part attached without magnetic objects but, they’re saved from falling thanks to the magnetic table. Chain Spider also got extra magnetic part on his string web tail part (N). With this we can create him hanging or make him attack to Microman’s chest or you can also use the string to tie-up the Microman. Frankly, I really like this feature and I prefer Chain Spider better than Cob-Rage.
Acro-Change Troopers appeared to be shorter than Demon Acroyears but, they’re still very slightly taller than the Microman’s height. Once again can’t be compared with SHF…
Lol… So much for the dedications….
My overall conclusion, I’m quite happy despite how cheap they looks but, the gimmicks are quite interesting especially Chain Spider one. I had alot of fun playing them and to be frank I’m getting more interested to collect more of this line although it won’t be easy but, so far I’ve got enough what I need for my future Microman review. The Acro-Change Troopers never appear in Kinoman series so, I bought them because I’ve watched the anime and… I know they’re just joke character but, when I saw the toys I’m more interested compare to the Micro-Change Troopers. So, I ended getting this 2. Actually, I’m having a hard time to get them. On the contrary I found many stores selling Micro-Change Troopers in a very low price instead but, it doesn’t mean that the Acro-Change Troopers are expensive. it’s just matter of our luck to find them. As you know this line up was already discontinued long time ago since the selling are very poor.
- Nice details & gimmicks.
- Better articulated legs than the Demon Acroyears.
- The magnetic features makes them easy to withstand their balance without stand display.
- Lack of articulation on the shoulders.
- Material & joints are quite fragile.
- Magnets aren’t strong enough.
- The large gap of their chest.
- Need more feature especially to hide those arms and legs during the snake/insect transformations.
- When in snake/insect transformations, they couldn’t balance their standing.
