Yes, 2nd review in 2018! Featuring another Dragon Ball collections, which is Dragon Ball Adverge 5: Son Gokou Normal and Ultimate Son Gohan! Well, I don’t really have any intention of buying this in the first but, their cheap prices drove me out to bought this 2. Dragon Ball Adverge is another Candy Toy line made from Bandai Shokugan, featuring Dragon Ball characters in their deformed proportions and mini sizes. Like other Bandai Shokugan Candy Toys, the figures was packaged in 1 set. 1 set of the box contains 7 variant characters with their respective printed boxes and 3 multiples but, in this article I will review only Goku (Normal) and Gohan (Ultimate). As you know, Son Gokou or “Goku” is the main protagonist of the Dragon Ball metaseries created by Akira Toriyama. Goku is a Saiyan originally sent to Earth as an infant with the mission to destroy it. However, an accident alters his memory, causing him to grow up pure-hearted and later become Earth’s greatest defender, as well as the informal leader of the Dragon Team. As for Son Gohan, he is known as the first son of the protagonist Goku, and his wife Chi-Chi, making him the first hybrid of Saiyan and Human. Gohan has the potential power even greater than his father since he has more human emotion but, unlike pure Saiyan he lacks fighting interest. Ultimate Gohan powers was achieved by a stupid silly ceremony performed by Old Kaio-Shin. Although technically this ability is not exclusive to Gohan alone as the ceremony can be used to unlock anyone’s sleeping powers, his was unusual in the amount of time it took to unlock due to his amazing potential. Thanks to his potential unlock, his base form becomes much stronger – eclipsing that of Gotenks in equivalent forms – and thus his Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan 2 forms power up as well, with his Super Saiyan form’s appearance also altering slightly. Perhaps, this Gohan is the strongest form from all of his appearance in DBZ and actually making him the strongest non fused/absorbed character in Dragon Ball series. Back to the figures, their boxes are entirely printed white with some little lining and the majority is the printed descriptions/featurette/warning. On the front they had the promotional full body photo of the respective figures and several other characters in squares, while the back shows the the bust shots of the entire figure set which is Son Gokou Normal (01), Super Saiya-jin God Son Gokou (02), Ultimate Son Gohan (03), Super Saiya-jin Son Gohan (04), Kuririn (05), Grand Zeno (06) and Whis (07). I have to admit the boxes are plain simple blind styled (no window) but, the characters are the one that piqued my interest. Okay, let’s see what’s inside then!
The contents consists of 1 figure of Goku and Gohan, the rests are their own display stand and candies.
Both Goku and Gohan was included with clear display stand, to make the figures standing without having worried of falling. You just need to attach their feet to the stand’s 2 holes. The stand has their own printed number to tell which one belongs to Goku or Gohan, Goku’s numbering is 1 while Gohan is 3.
Goku and Gohan wears their trademark orange colored gi outfit, blue undershirt, arm bands, obi belt and dark blue with red lining and yellow strings boots. In this figures, both Goku and Gohan are posing standing with slight open legs, arms down with hand gripping into fist. Yes, very standard posing but, still looks cool. Their clothing are identical but, Goku has some slight differences which he has kanji symbol on his chest and back while Gohan was entirely plain orange. Goku’s gi was based from his latest appearance in Dragon Ball Super, and Gohan’s gi came from his appearance in DBZ Buu Saga. He wears this again in Battle of Gods and Dragon Ball Super’s Universe Survival saga. Both Goku and Gohan was made into deformed style and they stands around 4-5 cm, yeah… They’re even shorter than CT66 Action series, which explained their cheap prices. They’re both built by the same format on the body but, the sculpt work is pretty decent enough especially on Goku one and the quality also looking pretty good although there are some few paint defects but, it’s nothing worse so far. However, Gohan is the worst one so far aside the incorrect orange colored gi and misspaint problem his back gi got some kind of seamlines that really bothering but, as long as it’s not his head I’m still okay with it. The whole figures was made from hard plastic PVC and ABS.
Both can still stand nicely without base display but, they easily fall off so, base display is still needed to avoid falling.
Goku still retained his unique spiky black hairstyle because he never actually change his hairstyle because of pure Saiyan to have their hair the same. Well, despite that but, there is some changes on his spikes such as he grew more spikes and several changed shape on his hair. Unlike the rests of my owned Goku figures (SHF and DWC), this Goku He has 3 bangs hanging to the right of his forehead with 1 upper bangs on the front head and 1 bangs hanging to the left. His hair also stands up with 4 spikes on the right side, 1 spike on the center and 4 spikes on the left side. His expression is shown standard smiling with determined looking eyes though, his lip was left unpainted. Goku’s irises are painted simple black, he is looking up to the front view. So far, he’s doing fine I have nothing to complain on his head even his face looks accurate enough like how Goku looks in the manga/anime, his hair was done in matte black color. Another thing to notice that between Goku’s back hair and fringe has cut but, it was glued.
Adverge Ultimate Gohan’s overall hair is also shown stands upwards and he only have 1 bang. Unlike Goku, Gohan’s hair has exactly the same shape like my SHF Ultimate Gohan‘s hair sculpt. Gladly, his forehead wasn’t that protruding in this one but, his overall quality wasn’t as good as Goku I must say. There’s something still unfinished from him like his spiky hair piece but, I can just cut it off. Gohan’s expression is shown smirking with small grin like he used to show before fighting Majin Buu, seems like this Gohan was based from his appearance in DBZ as Gohan never showed this expression again after that event. However, something feels off from his face idk, it’s like he doesn’t looked like Gohan somehow… Like Goku, Gohan also got glued fringe cut but, Gohan has darker hair tone than Goku.
Imagine if I want compare them with Play Arts figures… Adverge series are way too small for them, they just made my CT66 collections looks bigger. However, the DWC is the biggest around here and you can also see the difference between Adverge Goku’s hair with DWC one. Frankly, first time I saw the promotional of this Adverge series, I used to think they’d stand tall as WCF but, when I saw how tiny of their boxes I can tell these guys would stand shorter than CT66… Well, promotional pictures are indeed deceiving.
Like every Bandai Shokugan’s product, this Adverge figures also included with 1 candy/chewing gum on each figure’s box, the candies are chewing gum but, I assume they will taste the same like I did on the review of Styling Chi-Chi figures and I don’t really like that gum. It’s strange, I actually bought the Indonesian region of this Adverge and they usually didn’t included a candy/chewing gum on Asian region.
Kinda mixed feeling with this but, the good thing is despite the tiny size they’re still done pretty nice and very well detailed sculpt work with complete paintjob on every part of the figures. Yes, they’re way too small and the quality wasn’t that great but, it’s candy toys so I couldn’t expect much from them. However, it doesn’t matter as long as you don’t really concern that things, it’s still another decent pieces. So I still recommend this if you like small/trading/dragon ball figures, then this is still a great addition for your Dragon Ball collections.
- Good and detailed sculpt work.
- Good for displaying the figure on the desk or laptop or maybe in the cabinet or detolf.
- Complete paintjob’s done for a tiny figures.
- Some miss paint/paint transfer but, it’s tolerable for a prize figure. (Goku and Gohan)
- Incorrect gi color and some sculpt problem. (Gohan)
- Too small….
