Yes, today’s another SHF review featuring S.H.Figuarts Super Saiyan 3 Son Gokou Renewal Version from Dragon Ball Z series (Majin Buu saga)!! Son Gokou, better known as simply Goku, is a protagonist character of the Dragon Ball manga series written by Akira Toriyama. The figure features his appearance is in Super Saiyan 3 state, where he fights Majin Buu and it is the first time where we were introduced the power of Super Saiyan 3 and the epic moment of the form… SHF SSJ3 Goku also came up with different box design, which to have more simple looks compare his previous releases. The box coloring was overally white & gray shows many promotional pictures of the product, the inner tray inside the blister was colored yellow. On the back of the box, there’s 1 promotional picture featuring this Goku with Tamashii Effect Energy Aura Yellow Ver. (sold separately). Unlike the original first release, this SSJ3 Goku was a regular release and it was released in Septmber 2017. Okay, it’s time to unbox this guy!
Super Saiyan 3 Goku only comes up with 5 pair of option hand parts, 3 extra faceplates and stage act display stand set.
Like his 1st Super Saiyan state, Goku’s facial looks changed on the hair shape-color but, in 3rd state his hair grew longer and eye color also changed into green. This transformation surpassed both Super Saiyan 1 and 2 which is said to have stronger power and faster speed accompanied by ki aura in certain condition. Goku was the first to achieve the form, and was able to do so after several years of vigorous training in the afterlife. Although, wearing the exact outfit like the previous release of Gokus, SSJ3 Goku also given with new molding, body build and joints although, there is some part that still recycled from the old body but, it’s not noticeable I guess. There are also some changes on the outfit coloring which having more darker orange gi with blue purple-ish undershirt, obi belt, wrist bands and his dark blue colored boots. I’m just glad they didn’t overdid the the fabric details on the outfit and nolonger using that awkward looking knee joints and that weird extended tip shoulders. Once again this is what I call Renewal, the figure was made from PVC and ABS and he was based from his anime counterpart.
This SSJ3 transformation causes some stark changes in Goku’s face. The most notable are on Goku’s long hair which passes to his waist and unlike the rigid spiky hair or regular SSJ 1 and 2, the SSJ 3’s hair becomes flowing and smooth again but, Goku still retain 1 bangs. The hair color is still golden blonde which in this figure the coloring of Goku’s hair was done in yellow plastic with golden finishing paintjob but, there is slight color differences between all of his faceplate’s fringe and the back hair, which the fringe on every faceplates tends to have shading and has darker tone color. But, for me they’re still tolerable enough since it’s barely noticeable unless you’re not comfortable with it. Another notable physical changes from this transformation is Goku’s eyebrows vanish completely, making the forehead and eye ridges appear larger and revealing a more prominent brow ridge like Pikkoro lol. Goku’s eyes now has detailed irises which there is painted black pupil on each eyes. There are 4 total faceplates given to this Goku, 1st would be smirking expression which is his main faceplate and was already attached to the figure before we unbox him, the face is for recreating Goku’s proud after he succeeded transforming to this form. He did showed this expression after his first onscreen transformations before fighting Majin Buu. 2nd faceplate is would be standard serious expression but, that mouth was more like he’s sulking lol, his eyes are looking to the right. He also showed this expression right after his very first onscreen transformations. 3rd is an angry expression with his teeth showing serious grin and 4th one is yelling expression used for battle scene. They’re pretty much the same like his SSJ Super Warrior Awakening’s faceplates although there is no personality change, as no emotion is required to initiate the transformation but, Goku did this on his first onscreen with some painful effort lol. The faceplates were sculpted and painted meticulously, they really captured Goku’s looks perfectly, the paintjob are quite decent although mine one suffered many black spots on every faceplates but, it’s barely visible when I see it directly. However, it does kinda bothering when looking on the close headshot photos. Unfortunately, SSJ3 Goku’s neck joint has different joint that cannot allow us to detach his head, he was given with hinge joint to stabilize his head position from falling. Man, this is so lame!! I was expecting I can make SSJ3 Vegetto or swap other SHF Goku’s head to this new body…. 😦
SSJ3 Goku face was also done to be strongly like his anime or even manga counterpart especially from his appearance in Majin Buu saga but, still can’t beat the classic like Toriyama did on the manga. But, Bandai already did more than enough I think, although more slight face detailing would probably makes him better. They actually did the wrinkle sculpt on his main faceplate but, my only complain is they kinda overdid on the paint brush. Super Saiyan 3’s face was supposed to looked scary but, with Goku or even Gotenks as the only users in the anime, their faces actually made me loled due to their funny fight. One interesting thing in the anime, Goku’s entire body seems to “glow” while in this state, more so than before, where the skin and clothes color were lightened, but not as much as the color change of this form. This mostly applies to training gi; when Goku transforms into Super Saiyan 3, his training gi appears to be rather gold and blue instead of orange and blue.
SSJ3 Goku’s long hair won’t make an awkward looks like his normal form in every angle, perhaps the biggest changes are on his new body with updated joints which made him have more accurate looks and well proportioned build. His neck also given with a new sculpt that allows his head move/swivel much easier but, couldn’t withstand the long hair heaviness, his shoulder cut was also made to be rounder like the one in SSJ Goku Super Warrior Awakening version. However, the only thing remains the same is his arms which directly a recycled from the previous releases of Goku but, it’s still looks good so it doesn’t matter I guess. The most important is his knee joints got some big changes, like my SHF Kamen Riders, Goku now has knee pads and they’re removable. Frankly, I’m more fond with this instead of the old one, his gi also has some slight shading finishing, the most noticeable is on his pants (see the dark gradation on his crotch). The whole paintjob on the body was done very clean, I didn’t spot any single paint defect at all except the faceplates.
Goku’s long hair on the back was also articulated, we can swivel them to the center down, right and left. With this we can recreate many dramatic flowing hair pose for him especially for battle. However, moving his hair can be a bit hard so, becareful when you move them.
Articulations still works the same like the old body and like the Super Warrior Awakening version, this Goku was also given with articulated ab crunch which we can move up, down, bend and even swivel it a bit. The shoulder pads also movable like the old version using ball joint. His head can moves pretty good, you can make him looking up or down but, due to the heavy hair the joint couldn’t withstand so, he couldn’t bend down his head. SSJ3 Goku has butterfly joints for his arm’s movements, he can do crossed arms pose perfectly. We can also bend his elbow joints, another change is on his crotch which was articulated that allows his thighs do extreme split pose. The joint connection between his crotch and thighs looks something like attached pegs, you can see the gap inside his crotch looks like a peg. Unfortunately, the movements to do side split was a bit limited compare to the previous releases, we can also swivel his thighs but, not quite much. Goku’s double jointed knees are now made to be looking natural with better articulation works. His feet articulations are much the same like the predecessors but, that hinge jointed toes weren’t able to move down anymore.
Ah, yes… Since this Goku was based from his appearance in Majin Buu saga he possessed Angel’s Ring/Halo above his head. Well, he’s already dead during Cell saga but, got 1 day visit to earth in Babidi and Majin Buu saga. However, Goku was eventually revived back thanks to old Kaioshin’s sacrifice so, he nolonger possess Angel’s Ring/Halo anymore until his current appearances. The part is a circular hole with a peg stand for SSJ3 Goku’s hair peg hole but, the part was already attached before we unbox him. However, this part only attachable for SSJ3 Goku only since part aren’t compatible for other figures, if you wanna try attaching like my Goku Normal or SSJ Goku just use blu-tack, it works for me.
SSJ3 Goku comes up with 12 option hand parts in total. The 1st hands would be fistful hands as default hands from the figure for battle scenes or recreating Ryuken Bakuhatsu/Dragon Fist Explosion, the alternates consists 2 open splayed hands for recreating scenes like Kamehameha or Ki Blast, 2 open wide finger hands for like shooting alternate way of Ki Blast, 2 open gesturing 2 fingers for every DB character’s notable battle stance, 2 open wide finger hands for chop or maybe for alternate way of Ki Blast and 1 open wide 2 fingers for instantaneous movement or finger beam. Yes, they’re once again the same hands with same purposes like the predecessors.
SSJ3 Goku also comes with his own Stage Act display stand to maintain his posing from falling, it is the same stage act that Ultimate Gohan has but, Goku one was included with extra claw like the regular Stage Act Vol. 04. After experience it, the stage act wasn’t strong enough to maintain Goku’s heavy long hair as they easily fall if not in a correct position.
The height stands quite the same (if SSJ3 Goku’s ab crunch is in lifted position) but, due to the flowing back hair, SSJ3 Goku seems shorter than both Goku Normal or SSJ Goku SWA. Well, look at that differences… These SSJ3 Goku body makes the old one feels like a garbage indeed but, in terms of articulations I still prefer the old one’s crotch articulation since he can do side split better than the renewal one and perhaps the only part that I still like from the old body. His training gi outfit also has some different color tone, frankly they’re both accurate enough like in the manga since the coloring of Goku’s outfit can be inconsistent in several episodes of DBZ. Interestingly, SHF SSJ3 Goku indeed got lighter skin color than both Goku Normal Ver. and SSJ Goku SWA Ver., probably to show SSJ3 has some slight differences in skin color but, the color of his training gi remains the same orange and blue like in the Dragon Ball Super’s appearance but, in Super Goku sports the training gi with kanji on the chest and back like the one he used to wear in Freeza saga. His hair color also different from his SSJ SWA Ver., which is done with golden paintjob instead of keeping yellow with red-ish shade. The boot’s coloring between the SSJ SWA Ver. were done with same paintjob since they looked very identical. Unfortunately, I don’t have my own old release of SSJ3 Son Gokou as they get overpriced now so, I cannot make a comparison review between the old one. No Datong, they’re pretty expensive for a bootleg as well..
Hmm… Quite happy but, very disappointed with the black spots on the faceplates and unswapped head.. Though, came with less accessories than his old release but, this Goku still not disappoint me I’m pretty satisfied with the updated body with new fashioned joints. SSJ3 Goku is very fun to play so, I highly recommend you to buy this, it is another major improvements that Bandai did. My other complain is the expensive price for 1/12 figure with little accessories… Bandai these day, they only want bigger money yet they never learned their lessons in terms of Quality Control.
- Outstanding sculpt work and details.
- Clean Paintjob.
- Nicely articulated hair.
- Fitting accessories.
- New body and new joint so, no more body reused.
- So far the best and the most accurate SSJ3 Goku action figure ever made.
- Some missing details on his face.
- Faceplate defects on my Goku which suffers many black spots.
- His long hair is too heavy.
- Stage Act aren’t strong enough to maintain his posing for long time.
- Need more accessories, it’d be better if they also include Tamashii Effect Energy Aura Yellow Ver. without selling them separately or maybe just reinclude the aura effect from his original release.
Small Parts: 3/5
Accuracy sculpt: 4/5
