Another static figure is on the review but, it’s once again all about Pokémon character! The figure is Bandai Premium HG: Hanada City Gym Leader Kasumi! Kasumi or known worldwide as Misty is a Gym Leader of Hanada City a.k.a. Cerulean City. She gives the Cascade Badge to Trainers who defeat her in battle. She specializes in Water-type Pokémon. appears in Pokémon Red, Blue, Yellow, Fire Red, and Leaf Green as the Gym Leader of the Hanada/Cerulean Gym, which is the second Gym that the player challenges on their journey. Her strategy is an all-out attack with Water-type Pokémon, and she is constantly looking for ways to improve her technique. A swimmer herself, she trains at the Seafoam Islands. Well, the figure itself was packaged with blue colored blind box with printed few of her promotional photos, the rests are mostly logos, informations written all in Japanese and the side of the box there are printed screenshot of the Pokémon Red’s game of Red challenging her. Well, how very simple looking and once again not a good fan of the blind box lol. The figure line was called Bandai Premium HG which stands for High Grade I think and Kasumi was released somewhere in 2015, and since she’s a Bandai Premium release that would made her as an exclusive release. She was actually comes with her own brown case but, I don’t have the box since I already bought her like this. Also, she’s not alone as there’s also Bandai Premium HG: Hard Rock Gym Leader Takeshi/Brock the Nibi/Pewter City Gym Leader. Looks like the line is discontinued as there is no continuation again so far. Alright, it’s time to open her from the box!
The contents consists of 1 part of Kasumi figure and her base display with a clear stick and a claw.
Kasumi was included with solid black display stand with a stick and a claw for maintaining Kasumi’s standing position. Her display stand was made from solid plastic and to make her standing with the stand, you’ll have to attach Kasumi’s peg hole (underneath the right foot) into the base peg then attach the stick on the base peg hole followed by attaching the claw’s peg hole on the stick and finally attaching Kasumi’s figure to the claw.
Kasumi only wearing blue bikini and sandals but, her bikini are vary in most of her appearance. In this figure Kasumi’s design was directly based from her very first appearance in Pokémon Red and Blue games, which her body looks more revealing. She wears this getup until the 3rd generation but, this bikini once showed again in the Sun & Moon anime where Kasumi’s anime counterpart made a comeback appearance. Kasumi’s posing was also based directly like her ingame sprite, where she raised her right arm showing her armpit and positioned her left hand to the front of her belly, her footing position was shown like she’s walking and this posing only appeared during the gym battle. For a gym leader Kasumi got a small body build, it can be assumed she’s around 12-13 years old but, Kasumi’s age in the game was never revealed but, in most of her manga counterpart, she was stated to be 12 which she’s a year older than the protagonist Red or Satoshi/Ash but, in the anime she was said to be the same age with Satoshi/Ash. The sculpt work and quality is looking great so far, I don’t see any awkward paintjob or defected part, she’s pretty solid so far and part of her body was added with some shading brush to make her looked more lively. But, for a statue figure she’s pretty short (around 11 cm tall) and delicate but, no… I’m not trying to tell she’s a delicate girl but, infact the figure was very delicate as her entire body was made from a soft material. Which you can even force moving part of her body but, I highly recommend don’t do that as she feels very fragile, and things could get even worse to know she’s already pretty pricey by now. Anyway, Kasumi can still stand without the stick and the claw but still, a single shake might lose her balance and since she was made from a soft material she couldn’t stand really well due to her weight is pushing her footing position to be bend.
Kasumi got a short light orange colored hair with side ponytail tied with black hair band ties. Her expression is looking serious to the player (Red), she definitely looked exactly like her appearance in Pokémon Red and Blue games. Yeah, that daring getup with that short hair with ponytail and sharp eyes, clearly tells me enough she’s a tomboy and as a matter of fact, yes… She’s even considered as a tomboyish mermaid but, despite her tomboyish nature, she did actually have a feminine side which once called Red “sweetie” in Pokémon Yellow game but, that only spoken in the US version. Also, I’m glad her right arm wasn’t sticked/glued to her hair, since I can force moving her right arm a little.
Comparing with her ingame sprite made me thankful enough Bandai finally did a good job on bringing her into a figure. The posing is very accurate eventhough the sprite was too damn small to see but, you can’t expect much from an old 8-bit graphic game. But, it’d be great if she’s fully articulated though, I was hoping Figma would recreate her someday….
Well, Kasumi is small even for Figma Red which he’s actually one of my shortest figma. Due to Kasumi’s couldn’t stand on her own she’ll always needs her base display but, even without it she’s still slightly taller than Tamashii Buddies Sailor Saturn but, Saturn got larger head than Kasumi since TB figure was made to be deformed.
I… Kinda have a mixed feeling of this figure, the sculpting is indeed pretty good. What actually made me slightly amazed is they actually nailed Kasumi’s delicious armpit but… I still really wished they made her fully articulated since I’m not a fan of statue figures. And that soft material really made this figure feels really cheap but, it’s still a good one to collect if you like Pokémon series especially, there aren’t many existing decent figure of Kasumi/Misty so far. However, she’s getting pretty expensive in this time even there’re also some online stores that sells her overpriced. I actually got mine one for $23 unopened without brown case but, don’t know it’s a good deal or not….
- Good and detailed sculpt work.
- Good for displaying the figure in the cabinet or detolf.
- Perhaps one of the decent existing Kasumi/Misty figure ever made.
- Some minor misspaint but, it’s tolerable.
- Bendy materials on the figure.
- Too pricey for her size and quality.
