This review post will discuss another Bandai SHF figure, which is S.H.Figuarts Winspector Walter and Full Package Option Set! Yes, another 2 figure set in 1 post! Firstly, Tokkei Winspector is a Japanese tokusatsu TV series, part of the Metal Hero Series and the first piece of the Rescue Hero trilogy. The series follows the adventures and missions of a special “Rescue Police” team known as Special Police Winspector, as they stop crimes and respond to dangerous events where regular police force is not sufficient. The team is made up of one human, (a hero clad in armor) Ryouma Kagawa a.k.a. Fire and two robots, Walter and Bikel. Walter is Bikel’s “twin brother”, Walter is the other of the two robots in the team. He’s equipped with Dislider wings enables him to fly, thus requiring no special vehicle. The rests of his equipment are Multi Pack, Daytric M2 and HandWapper. Walter loves children and he is generally the type of “person” who enjoys life but, is serious compared to his twin brother. Why only Walter? Because Walter is my childhood hero, and back in my childhood I only managed to watched 2 or 3 episodes of Winspector… Coincidentally, one of the episode only focussed on Walter, which eventually grew my interest on him much more than Fire and Bikel. All I remembered at that time Walter is loved by children, he even get a kiss from a little girl and played with children. Ok, enough for the nostalgia feeling, onto the review! Both Walter and Full Package Option set comes with a brown colored box which marked them as Premium Bandai Tamashii Webshouten Exclusive release. So, yeah… They really cost my money way too much perhaps, the most expensive SHF figures I’ve ever bought after SHF Ridron. Yet, they turned out to be very-very disappointing due to Bandai Tamashii Nations being a complete slacker! But, it can’t be help… My childhood memories eventually won the battle from my judgement of not buying. Aside their filthy looking brown case, the actual boxes was done in a blind styled box. Which we can only enjoy the artwork of the boxes but, can’t see the figures inside. Although, I have to admit the boxarts are still looking good despite the simpleness but, it would have been alot better if they added window tray for us to stare the contents. Yeah, once again I’m not a fan of blind boxes. The front view features the large promotional photos of the figures while the back one consists the product description with tons of small promotional photos for the product descriptions. Walter’s half back box however, was almost completely dominated by the warning sign of the figure which all written in Japanese. Both Walter and Full Package Option Set was released in 2016. Alrighty, time to unpack these guys!
Walter comes up with 5 pair of option hand parts, Dislider, Daytric M2 and 2 oil cans.
While Full Package Option Set comes up with 3 type of Multi Packs with their separate pieces, Gigastreamer with alternate back piece and claw mode, Spin Claw, Clapper, Alternate back piece for Walter’s Dislider and Bikel’s back, 2 variant Handwappers, 2 variant WinBadges, 2 pair of hands and 2 Maintenance Chairs with separated pieces.
Winspector Walter is a Metal Hero which the costume designs usually have more robotic feel compared to those Kamen Rider and Sentai series. His body armor was done in a shiny metallic turquoise, the rests are painted silver and black but, there are some itsy bitsy red, yellow, blue and Winspector logo on the chest colored in turquoise for the background and yellow for the star. Walter is called green in the show but, maybe it’s just my eyes deceived me but, I don’t see him being green at all… His turquoise color looks more blue-ish instead of green. However, the 3 Winspectors are called Red (Fire), Yellow (Bikel) and Green (Walter), that colors represents like traffic lights colors which is red, yellow and green. I think this may be the reason why Walter is called green but, it’s just my wild guess so forget it… I have to admit from the sculpting and molding, Walter is perfectly well made like his show counterpart. You can see the many small sculpt details around his body and head but, the disappointing part is most of those meticulous sculpting was left unpainted which made him plain and inaccurate from the show. Ironically, in the very early prototype shown Walter along with his other 2 Winspectors was done added complete with their detailings but, in the promotional photos even the final product they toned down their itsy bitsy detailing. I don’t understand why they did this but, another disappointing part is he’s way too expensive for an SHF figure being an exclusive release. Walter’s material was made from PVC and ABS.
While Full Package Option Set, they’re just bunch of Winspector’s arsenals and gadgets shown the series, they’re made very well done from the sculpting and molding but, they suffers the same problem like Walter which they lacked the detailing in several parts even some of the parts aren’t painted at all… Kinda understandable by some of their microscopic size but, It’d still alot been better if they’re painted. I’ve seen Bandai Tamashii Nations already did better in Kamen Rider, Sentai and even the pasts SHF Metal Hero series but, what in the world is going on with this? Where is your so called spirit, Bandai Tamashii Nations? It can’t be help at all but, to accept their laziness and I have to do it on my own adding the detailing on the unpainted parts. If you’re wondering whether they got diecast materials or not, the answer is a “NO”. They’re completely made from PVC and ABS as well.
Walter got robotic styled head, I gotta admit the sculpting of his head really replicates the real deal. You can see the head got many tiny details and lines which, made the figure looked very realistic. His head was also painted shiny turquoise with some silver on his jaw, cheeks and the head accessory on the back. His center face was painted glossy black with glossy yellow painted eyes. Walter also got movable flipping transcluent black visor on his head, so we can make closed and opened visor to show his robot eyes. His visor is detachable and very user friendly but, without the visor Walter looks funny indeed… However, all those very detailed sculpting lacks the color detailing. thus making him inaccurate from the show. Disappointing indeed but… You can just add your own detailing if you feel bothered. What made this review became a late review is because my SHF Walter also got repaint treatment including on his head so, now he looks more faithful to the show counterpart. Repaint works thanks to Cluster Modelkit.
In the show, Walter is a humanoid robot created as a Special Rescue Police Winspector member, his proportion is looking bulky due to his robotic armor and his moving body usually can be heard a robot like machine sound. Walter is a tall robot but, seemingly equal to those of Kamen Rider and Sentai series. His robotic armor consists large chest, back, shoulders, arms, belt, crotch and legs. What made Walter unique compare to his other 2 Winspectors, his shoulder pads was attached with black colored armor plate on both sides and he also got 2 fins around his lower arms. Unfortunately, these unique things actually made his movements become limited. His right thigh has a hostlers for holstering one of his arsenal. The paintjob was done nicely clean, I didn’t spot any single paint defect on him except the missing detailing but, after the repaint treatment he looks more well detailed now. (photo comparisons above) However, his articulations sucks as there are lots of limit on every part but, atleast he’s still a good one for viewing.
Several body parts of Walter are easy removable especially that elbow that which always detached whenever I want to swap his hands. His rear also removable in order to make him using his Dislider accessory. My point is, since most of them are too small and seems breakable becareful when you deal with them, you might don’t wanna lose or accidentally break one of them.
His overall articulations works pretty simillar to Kamen Rider BLACK Renewal series but, thanks to his unique designed costume they obstacled his arm movements such as armor plate on the shoulder pad and the fin on his wrists. With this, I couldn’t make a perfect crossed arms pose but, it doesn’t really matter as Walter is never seen crossing his arms. His head and neck also moves pretty standard but, you can’t make him looking up. His shoulder pad was done using the same old school Kamen Rider BLACK’s hinge jointed shoulder pad. He also got movable chest and ab crunch which is pretty limited. The worse part is his crotch articulations which they’re using the same articulation style like SHF Robo Rider’s crotch… We can’t do any dynamic posing like split or high kick pose for him. However, he got easy articulated thigh cut, we can still make a cross legged sitting pose for him perfectly.
Walter is included with Daytric M2 as one of his primary arsenal, in the show each member has one. The gun can either be stored in leg hostlers and you can also form it into 2 type: handgun or stick. The handgun mode has 3 versions of beam, 1st laser beam to destroy something, 2nd taser round beam to knockout the enemies, and 3rd extinguishing beam. Interestingly, rather than making into 2 separate piece, they added articulations on it which can be formed easily. The part already came in handgun mode, to form it into stick simply move forward the slide and stretch the grip. Each form should be attach by different hands, the handgun mode you’ll need to use Walter’s holding the trigger hands, and for the stick mode you can use his holding/gripping hands but, it could work fine too with holding the trigger hands. I like this accessory although, once again it has missing detailing and color but, I did make a change on the gun as well. You can see the comparison photo before and after, before it gets a repaint treatment, the gun was simply painted metallic black with only turquoise line detail on the front slide. After the repaint, part of the gun was repainted silver and added a winspector logo detailing like how in the show. Yeah, tried the best to make it more show accurate.
Walter’s own iconic arsenal was included as well which none other than his Dislider! It’s a winged gadget that allows Walter to fly, he also can fly carrying Bikel. Aside movable wings, the peg joint on the back must be attached on Walter’s back by removing his back plate to reveal his peghole. You can also transform it into bataclan shield mode by moving the handler inside and use his holding/gripping hand to make him hold the handler. Being equipped with this he can go anywhere he want and even has extra armor in shield mode, thus requiring no special vehicle. I’ll be damned if they give him a car or a bike. However, the shield mode was never used as a shield in the show but, it once used as somekind of chainsaw by Walter. so, I’m guessing this is an extra feature from Bandai. Yes, once again it’s a very accurate sculpted accessory but, it still lack a little detailing. However, it’s not actually a big deal since it’s just a small coloring on the front wings but, still added the details to make it more show accurate.
Walter is given 2 kinds of oil cans (coke can shaped and 4 square shaped) for him to drink to get a fuel recharge, maybe? Hmm… Makes me wonder, how did he drink while he has no mouth? I guess this is just a comical joke for Walter and Bikel as they’re robots but, drinks like a human. Well, the scene of Walter and Bikel drinking the oil cans are mostly shown in the closing ending theme. The oil cans was printed with their own brand names and they’re included with alternate pair of hands for Walter to holding the cans. Overall, they’re just a bonus part and I have no interest even if they got some missing detailing.
Walter comes up with 12 option hand parts in total. The 1st hands would be fistful hands as default hands out from the box for variant fistful pose you want, the alternates consists 2 open splayed hands for any kinds of pose you wish to recreate, 2 other open splayed hands for holding oil cans, 2 holding the trigger hands for holding Daytric M2 (handgun) but, if you got Full Package Option Set you can use them to hold the included part like Gigastreamer and Clapper, 2 holding/gripping hands for holding Daytric M2 (stick) and Dislider (shield), you can also use them to hold Spin Claw if you got Full Package Option Set. And finally a chopping hands for recreating his trademark walking pose or you can also make for other purpose you like. The hand sculpt looked well detailed and probably accurate enough to the show.
Now, to the Full Package Option Set! The set comes with 3 type of Multi Packs for each members, in order to make the Winspectors use them we need to assemble them first. All 3 Multi Packs comes with their own unique shaped sticks for the straps that worn to all Winspectors, we need to attach the sticks on the back pack’s joint location and (see the photos above) do not to misplace their joint location. One thing I don’t really like is the stick joints doesn’t seem to be completely attached even if I tried harder to attach them as they’re too easy to pop off. As for the first one there are 2 cannons included that need to be attached on the Multi Pack’s muzzles, in the show these 2 cannons are called Liquid Nitrogen Ammunition and with this attached, it will be called Multi Pack Caulking Version. The 2nd one is actually the same Multi Pack like the 1st one but, it doesn’t have Liquid Nitrogen Ammunition parts, this type is usually called Multi Pack Fire Version. There is a little different between the 1st and 2nd, the 1st Multi Pack has a printed Bandai China and probably product number or something, while the 2nd one doesn’t. The 3rd Multi Pack is called Air Version, which it is sculpted differently without fire extinguishers. This version only works for like a first aid equipment such as air masks, you can see there were tons of air masks on it. As usual, sculpt and moldings are top notch but, once again some of the detailing was left unpainted. However, I’m not really interested on adding Multi Pack’s detailing. Also, the set was also included with 2 alternate back parts, one for Walter’s Dislider’s back and the other one for Bikel’s back. Both of these back parts got peg holes that must be attached to the Multi Packs. In the promotional photos of the set, Multi Pack Caulking Version is worn on Fire, while Fire Version on Bikel and Air Version on Walter. But, in several episodes, the Winspectors wears differently depending on the situations so, you can also make your other Winspectors wear different type of Multi Pack.
The set also comes with 3 type of weapons, this one is called Clapper. It can used for firing anchor unit, while the ammos can be vary depending on the episodes, sometimes they use liquid nitrogen round, limestone bullet and knockout round. The bullets also visible in the Clapper’s ammo stock itself but, it is a one mold. In the promotional photos, it was used by Walter but, in the show Walter and Bikel once use Clapper at the same time in some episodes meaning, each member has one as well. Once again it’s a good & detailed prop with no further detailing but, probably not that much necessary to add.
The other one is Spin Claw. It works as a drilling machine that able to break the wall. It was included with alternate opened claw that can be swap. When the claw is opened it’s called Manipulator Mode, it works pretty much the same but, with the ability of cutting something. I guess, that’s the only thing of this arsenal was capable of. In the promotional photos, it was used by Bikel and in the show Bikel indeed frequently used Spin Claw in several episodes. Another good and detailed prop with probably some missing detailing but, seems unlikely noticeable.
Ahh… GigaStreamer the strongest weapon in the world according to the show. Yes, this one is exclusive for Fire only as it can be combine with his primary weapon MaxCalibur. In order to combine it with MaxCalibur there’s an alternate separated pipe piece included for attaching MaxCalibur, this is to recreate GigaStreamer Maxim Mode. Unfortunately, since I don’t have Fire so, I’m going to skip this one out until I can aquire him or his weapon only, then I will update the review. GigaStreamer has two modes Plasma Bullet Shooter and Hand Drill, which Bandai also included hand drill mode to allow us swapping the part. Pretty sure it has some missing detailing but, so far still looks good.
Like in the show, the Winspectors are also given with HandWapper for them to arrest the criminals, they’re cops afterall. In this set, there’re 2 kinds of HandWapper which is small and large. The small one can be hold by one pair of the included option hand parts or any other hands that are fittable. It can also be used to make your other figure being chained by the HandWapper on their wrists, the small one would fittable for any 1/12 female action figure that has delicate/small wrists. While the large one is definitely used for any 1/12 male action figure but, after using them on Kyo or even Body-Chan’s wrists, both HandWappers are still little too big for them. The large one would probably fit for Body-Kun as one of the promotional photo shown Body-Kun is being arrested by the Winspectors. And the small one was probably only meant to be hold by their hands, since there is no featured Body-Chan being arrested. In the show itself, the HandWapper magically chained the criminal’s wrists just by touching one of their wrist, sometimes also magically turn bigger than the original size depending on the criminal’s wrists size. This is the reason why they included 2 HandWappers in the set. Both HandWappers were made from simple gray colored plastic and they’re completely unpainted, which really displeased me since they looked very cheap aside being inaccurate from the show but, this one was full repainted to make them more realistic feel.
Another exclusive accessory for Fire which is WinBadge/FireBadge, aside being Ryouma/Fire’s Police License the badge can be functional as a communicator to the Winspector headquarters and also controlling his WinSquad/FireSquad. Like HandWapper, the badge also comes in 2 set which is closed tray and opened tray. The closed badge was shown when Ryouma/Fire is about to open the badge, and the opened tray reveals golden colored Winspector logo and several buttons. Well, since I don’t have Fire so I used Walter for like introducing himself as one of the Winspector member. To make him holding the badge you’re going to need one pair of the other option hand parts included in the set. For sure do not misplace, if you let them fall to the floor… Goodluck on searching them, these accessories are freakishly microscopic! Yes, if there’s a photo comparison by me, that means the WinBadge/FireBadge also got some detailing treatment to make them more show accurate as I’m not really happy with how simple they looks on the original.
2 Maintenance Chairs was included as well in this set, used for Walter and Bikel’s bed resting/recharging power. The bed must be attached with the 2 joints to recreate the scene how Walter and Bikel gets deployed/activated like in the show. The beds are completely made from plain gray plastic with plain yellow paintjob for the center line but, they got very meticulously sculpted lines which kinda unecessary to add since in the show, the beds only has 2 ventilations up and down and some lines on the yellow part. Yes, this accessories aren’t show accurate but, that sculpted lines actually make them looked more realistic but, if only they added some weathering or detailing like black lining or something I’m pretty sure, the bed would looked more awesome!
Last but, not least is the option hand parts given for the set, which is 2 pair of open splayed hands with different finger gestures. They’re used to hold HandWapper and WinBadge/FireBadge.
Compared to SHF ShadowMoon and Dragon Ranger, Walter stands equally to them. Which means Metal Hero series has the same standard proportions like Kamen Rider and Sentai series but, most of Metal Heroes tends to have bulkier body due to their robotic design. Another coincidental reason why they stands equally, Walter’s suit actor is the same guy who played ShadowMoon although, I’m pretty sure that’s not the case lol.
Honestly, before the repaint I’m utterly disappointed by how he turned out, I just can’t believe how lazy Bandai was but, it’s not a surprise anymore from them. After the repaint, Walter became my new favorite figure, although I kinda have a mixed feeling mainly because he’s godlessly expensive yet, repainting process wasn’t that cheap. Bandai really screwed me on this one. However, despite the lack of detailing, the sculpting and molding are still brilliantly made, most of them was done very accurate to the show. If you like Winspector series, these figures are still preferable but, if you’re not fond with the price or maybe the lack of details then he’s not worth for you to have. Man, I don’t think I want to complete this line anymore yet, I have no interest on both Fire or even that lousy Bikel. Frankly, after I rewatched the full episodes I’m also quite disappointed as the series progressed, because Walter’s only big time is only in episode 16, which is the only episode that made me liked Walter so much in my childhood. After that Walter’s role is getting faded away as they’re too much giving big role on Fire and Bikel. Currently, SHF Walter is getting more expensive compared to Fire and Bikel, he even beats the Full Package Option Set. I don’t know why, on the begining I thought he’s going to be flops as he’s not that big even in the show itself.
