Another Super Sentai/Power Rangers review again! Today, I’m going to review Hasbro Lightning Collection: Mighty Morphin White Ranger and custom Tommy Oliver! Lightning Collection (LC) is one of Hasbro’s toyline which focussing Power Rangers series, it feature a highly-articulated, 6-inch figures with best-in-class detailing and design, and recreate Photo Real technology for realistic actor likenesses. So, that’s what they said, huh? Okay, they are similar to Hasbro Marvel Legends but, it’s all about Power Rangers. This figure marked as the first Hasbro’s Power Rangers figure after they bought Saban’s Power Rangers franchise. The prototype was shown since the middle of 2018 and was released early 2019. Yes, Hasbro is another US toy company so, there is no Japanese writings on the box. The box was designed to have simple look, window styled that almost half covered with White Ranger bust artwork and Hasbro logo, black printed “Saban’s Power Rangers” and “Lightning Collection” logo with orange line and printed “Mighty Morphin White Ranger” and warning sign above White Ranger’s artwork. On the back, the box feature a rendered White Ranger figure in gray and white background and orange layout with figure informations and warning signs in multiple languages, copyrights of the figure and Hasbro logo. The logo of “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” (MMPR) is located on the side of the box but, it’s printed gray and white only. Alright, it’s time to unbox this guys!
White Ranger comes with Byakko Shinken sword as well as the blue colored FX, 2 option hands and Tommy Oliver head but, I also added extra civilian body for Tommy Oliver. Well, original contents doesn’t have this body which are not even better than S.H.Figuarts (SHF) but, atleast the price is very reasonable to buy.
White Ranger is Tommy’s secondary form and it was created from the White Light of Good, it would be impossible for the darkness to control him. Tommy was the perfect candidate to take on the powers for his bravery and determination from his old Ranger days. In this form, he overall wearing white colored outfit, his trademark armor is comprised of a shiny golden chestplate with matte black coloring and 4 black and golden wrist bands on his respective arms and legs as well as his golden belt and Byakkoshinken’s holster. The overall figure was made from hard plastic and soft plastic on his armor and belt to his holster, his body is screwless but, some still got visible pegs.
Tommy Oliver’s body is a headswapped from Hasbro Marvel Legends: Marvel Studios The First 10 Years Tony Stark and Iron Man Mark 1, in here Tommy is wearing dark blue suit and pants, white shirt with long dark blue tie and glossy black shoes. Yeah, everything in this body did not suit to Tommy’s original portrayal but, I don’t care about that since I prefer full suited male figures instead of shirtless. Aside that, this body looks perfect for his head. Could be good to make somekind of Business man/Secret Service/Agent Tommy.
Helmet sculpt is closely accurate to his Sentai show counterpart so far. There’s indeed a strong resemblance like in the show but, not perfect. The gold paint app may looked good on him but, the dark/dirty feel did not portray him accurately to the show. Because both KibaRanger/White Ranger gold parts are simply bright gold color but, not that shiny. However, I still like this despite the inaccurate, the only thing I don’t like is the paintjob quality is godlessly messed up… I had to pick 1 out of 5 stocks that has good quality on the paint app, Hasbro really needs to control their QC. I don’t care it’s $20 or not but, there have been alot of paint app problem and that is intolerable. White Ranger actually got Tommy Oliver head as his unmasked head but, I’ll show them in comparison section.
Tommy Oliver… Well, he actually got face repaint treatment because of my original Tommy Oliver head sculpt suffered missing half printed left eye paint. Originally, his paintjob is not even better than SHF one but, after repaint treatment I have to say he looked slightly better although, not perfect to the real actor but, atleast he got realistic looking face paint than hasbro did. Like SHF Unmasked Green Ranger and White Ranger, LC Tommy HS was based from the actor Jason David Frank (JDF), I actually loved how Hasbro did the sculpting of his face shape from eyes, nose and mouth looks very intensely detailed and loving how the hairlines was sculpted nicely. His hair was repainted dark brown perhaps a little too dark maybe… He is wearing hair tie from his front bangs to the back showing his forehead and ponytail, the head was done with a hard plastic material but, his ponytail was made from soft plastic. Tommy’s hair tie was black in MMPR movie so, it’s okay if they want to colored the same color with the hair. Hasbro did not added Tommy’s pearl white earring mold on his left ear. Tommy sports this hairstyle from near the end of 1st until probably half of 3rd seasons of MMPR. Tommy’s head was repainted by sfabsworkshop.
Oh, well… Like every Power Rangers toyline for Bandai US Market even my Diamond Select Toys The Real Ghostbusters, White Ranger got chunky looking torso but, atleast his body did not suffer some steroid problem. The overall sculpt work shows more fabric feel on his arms and legs, I have to admit this is good because, in both Super Sentai/Power Rangers all rangers bodies are mostly covered with spandex fabric. The figure features over 20 points of articulation points for high poseability which we can make tons of posing for him. The only thing I don’t like is the bended left elbow joint, Idk exactly know but, it’s already like this before I open it. Perhaps it has something wrong from the packaging. Now, let’s see how Hasbro did the articulations!
The overall articulations, they’re pretty good but, I’m still not used to this line. White Ranger got articulated head that can be swivel 180 degrees and bend up/down head. He can stretch his waist to the back quite good, even he can do crossed arms pose thanks to the bicep cut and his ab crunch also allow his movements be more dynamic although the cut on the body looks awkward but, I have to say this parts actually rivals SHF maybe slightly better but, Hasbro doesn’t have articulated lower neck. We can also swivel his waist 180 degrees and bend his waist to the side but, not as dynamic as SHF one. Leg articulations can also do some various posing but, not as dynamic as SHF does, because White Ranger doesn’t have movable crotch and toes. Which recreating some pose can be hard but, I like how his foot can maintain the balance really good without shaking on high kick pose. His double jointed elbow and knee looks good enough, although the visible pegs kinda making this figure feels really cheap but, this isn’t SHF lol. Unlike, SHF which the armor is part of their body, LC’s armor is somehow removable since they’re not glued or anything but, to remove them in good shape you’ll have to open the whole part that obstacled the armor’s removal but, I’m not going to do that for sure. Despite the soft plastic material, his armor still obstacled some of his arm’s movements but, not troublesome as SHF one. White Ranger’s holster is not movable so, posing him in sitting pose can be a bit problem but, this only occur when you holstered his sword. Despite the articulated legs, I cannot make a side split pose for him due to his wide butt made of hard plastic which unfortunately similar to SHF one but, SHF can still perform alot better than Hasbro.
Since full suited Tommy is a direct headswap of Tony Stark so, I’m also like reviewing Marvel Legends figure. This body looks good and perfect for Tommy’s HS, and also shares the same skin tone. Although, his arms and legs are kinda too skinny to me because of his chunky torso but, atleast this chunky torso was covered enough thanks to his suit. The overall painting on his suit looks good although, most of his materials aren’t painted except his belt but, there’re several small details such as sculpted buttons that they missed but, it doesn’t really matter I think. His articulations are the same like White Ranger because Marvel Legends got the same body build as Lightning Collection. Tony… I mean Tommy’s body is overally covered by the suit so, moving his body can be very limited especially his suit was made from semi hard plastic so, it would be hard to make a dynamic pose for him. The footing positions are bit imbalanced due to his toes are slightly bend so, he’s easy to fall of the ground. The same bended elbow joint also happened in Tommy’s body but, it’s on the right side, I definitely think this is because of the packaging problem.
Since he got the same joint style so, his articulations works the same like White Ranger but, thanks to his long suit his movements are very limited so, we can’t really make extreme dynamic pose for him. The posing still looked pretty good but, he got limited leg articulations as he couldn’t do wide split pose.
White Ranger’s only weapon is ByakkoShinken, the sword was sculpted the same way like SHF one but, got different looks since it’s from different company. Unlike SHF, the sword only comes in extended blade version. Originally, the sword was only painted white, gold, silver for the blade and his head with black lines on the head but, in this review. The sword also got repainted to have accurate looks to the actual prop but, I mainly based everything from Legacy Saba. The sword was repainted by the same guy whom repainted my Tommy’s HS, the sword may looked great with this repaint but, the painting on his face is a little off in the close-up view and some parts was done a bit overdid as well but, the repaint is still alot better than before repaint. The sword can be either holstered or grab it with White Ranger and Tommy’s right grasping hand. Also, you can either make for action scene or simply White Ranger talking to the sword.
White Ranger only comes up with 4 option hand parts in total. Out from the box, White Ranger already had his grasping right hand and chopping left hand attached on both wrists. The alternate are a pair of fistful hands, the purpose of these are very much the same like SHF one to make him holding ByakkoShinken or fight scene. His hands were sculpted closely the same like SHF, you can see there’re several lines on top of his hands. As for the joints, they’re using pegs and hinge joints for moving their hands which feels kinda outdated for me. While Tommy Oliver only comes with grasping right hand and open splayed left hand which already attached on his wrists and seemingly unremovable since I cannot remove them despite my hard try. His hands looked kinda wrinkly in person but, not really visible in photos. Probably, these hands were originally used for grabbing somekind of gun because his grasping right hand got one finger like pulling the trigger and his left hand looks like he’s holding a big gun but, you can still use his hands for other purposes.
Hasbro also included effect part for ByakkoShinken, which can be attach on top of the sword tip. With this, you can recreate the action scene much more dramatic although, once again it’s another lifeless looking effect. The FX was colored clear sky blue and some white shading. I don’t actually remember when did White Ranger unleash this effect in the show but, I assume this is somekind of fx for getting hit by the sword since there’s indeed lightning effects everytime white ranger uses his sword during his fight scenes.
Both White Ranger and Tommy almost stands equally but, if I didn’t customize his neck, White Ranger would probably be slightly shorter than Tommy. Still, this is very unnoticeable to see from distance so, no big deal.
On the begining, this review will be focussing on LC and Bandai Legacy White Ranger but, I didn’t managed to get my own Legacy White Ranger due to my preorder got dropped out along with Green Ranger. In this matter, I only show my SHF KibaRanger and Unmasked White Ranger figures for the comparisons. In this section, the photos of my LC Tommy HS is still not repainted yet. LC stands slightly taller than SHF, I think it’s around 15-16 cm compared to SHF which stands 13-14 cm. I gotta say, in unmasked version of LC Tommy’s head look a little too small while his torso is freakishly too big. Yeah, right… Compared to SHF version, LC looks like just another typical children’s super hero toy with too bulky proportions which I personally not a fan of this kind of body build. However, atleast I gotta admit Hasbro did an intense details of the fabric sculpt compared to SHF but, I still prefer the simpleness on SHF alot better because LC is a little bit overdid somehow. LC’s golden parts also kinda too dark on several part especially on the legs since the right leg’s golden part is darker than the left one. Currently, SHF tends to be more expensive due to their 6 years old release and fragile than LC, LC also got better accessories and bigger size. I think that’s the most reasons why people prefered LC better over SHF and I gotta admit that too but, it would be a very different story if Bandai plan to renew SHF Super Sentai series which unlikely to be possible since they officially discontinued SHF Sentai line. As for articulations, imo each version got their own pros and cons but, it’d be better if you take a look back on my SHF KibaRanger review in here.
In this part, I also added White Ranger’s head attachment, in here you can see my LC Tommy HS before he got repainted. The hairstyle of LC is the same like Tommy HS from SHF Unmasked Green Ranger but, since the review is all about White Ranger so, I put the head on my SHF KibaRanger since the HS joint fits. In terms of sculpting and mold Hasbro actually nailed this but, since this is a $20 figure so, the paint app doesn’t really captured the realistic face of the actor and yet, they didn’t managed the QC really well.. So, it’s a letdown for me because I was hoping much from Hasbro since SHF failed to do this. However, if only LC eyes are printed with SHF eye printing, I think Hasbro would totally nailed this. You can check on my SHF Unmasked Green Ranger and Unmasked White Ranger here.
As for the Byakko Shinken, they’re pretty identical in size except LC is tiny bigger, and actually LC’s head captured accurately compared to SHF but, the problem is there’re indeed so many missing detailings in the sword but, I guess I can’t blame much for a $20 figure. And this problem can be solved by repainting the sword if you can.
Good piece from Hasbro but, not the best one out there, and I still prefer my old SHF KibaRanger figure since he could move more dynamic than LC did imo. To be honest, “a highly-articulated, 6-inch figures with best-in-class detailing and design, and recreate Photo Real technology for realistic actor likenesses.” words isn’t something accurate to describe since I’ve seen better than this. Yet again, not happy with the Tommy HS but, still better choice than SHF one. Aside, being reasonable on the price, LC White Ranger actually good option for your first time starting collecting Power Rangers series but, must be selective enough on getting them since they may suffer worse defected paint app. As for Tommy’s body, the body of Marvel Legends Tony Stark actually perfect enough for your custom figures especially if you want to create a civilian form of the ranger with full body. Atm, LC figures are still sold reasonably so, get them while you still can.

Few hours later….
Yeah, whatever you said then but, I do have to agree Saba sounds lame imo….
Few moments later…
I kinda curious to see how the real JDF would perform
What happened to the White Ranger?!
What?! Ow… It’s KibaRanger.
This line sounds familiar somehow….
Hohoho… Challenging KibaRanger?
I bet Tommy would win!
You don’t morph?
First kick but, easily dodged by Tommy!
This looks cool indeed! Machine gun punches!
Ouch… How did he?!
He stole your sword!!
Few minutes later….
