Another custom Marvel Legends (ML) figure is going to be another The Centurions character, Jake Rockwell: ‘Rugged’ Land Operations Commander!’ from Centurions: Power Xtreme!
Centurions: Power Xtreme/The Centurions is a syndicated American science fiction animated television series produced by Ruby-Spears and was animated in Japan by Nippon Sunrise’s Studio 7. Comic book artists Jack Kirby and Gil Kane contributed to the design and concepts of the show while Norio Shioyama did the character designs. The series began in 1986 as a five-part mini-series and was followed with a 60-episode series. For the series premise; In the near future, Doc Terror and his cyborg companion Hacker unleash their forces to conquer Earth! Only one force can stop this evil: a handful of brave men. In specially created Exo-Frames, they can be transported anywhere to fuse with incredible Assault Weapon Systems beamed down from the space station Skyvault, becoming man and machine, Power Xtreme! Max Ray, brilliant Sea Operations commander! Jake Rockwell, rugged Land Operations specialist! Ace McCloud, daring Air Operations expert! Whatever the challenge, they are ready! the Centurions! Well, atleast that’s according to the cartoon opening. This review will focus on Jake Rockwell with his Fire Force Assault Weapon System. Again, this custom figure got no box art but, I just did my own designed box art which would be printed someday. From my designed box the front part features window styled box with the contents posing when Jake shouting “Power Xtreme!” to fuse with his Assault Weapon System (AWS). The front part features 1 large photo of custom Jake figure armed with his Fire Force, I also added several logos on the box they are; 14+ logo, Centurions: Power Xtreme logo and my personal logo of VioFitz. While the overall background is actually a ground background with a brown with yellow trim layout introducing the character which written “Jake Rockwell™ Land Operations Expert Fire Force Assault Weapon System”. As the box written, the figure was customized by Ruby Farisyi. While the back side of the box the design is very simple but, I’m actually following like how the Kenner box art did but, the background is still a ground in order to depict Jake’s specialty on land operations while there’s a large Centurions logo and a profile data of Jake Rockwell. His profile is written based from the Kenner box art. I also added “Warning” sign for this figure as well, since his accessories consisted many small parts. Quite a simple made box art because it’s not an official figure lol. Alright, time to review the whole figure!
Jake comes with 1 figure of himself while his accessories consisted to his Fire Force AWS, which attachable to his body.
Jake Rockwell is a member of The Centurions, and serves as the team’s Rugged Land Operations Expert. He’s the world’s expert on ground maneuvers, Jake is a member of the most formidable fighting force team, the Centurions. In the show Jake is shown to be the brutish among all Centurions but, he can be calm although sometimes at odds with Ace’s cocky and womanizer attitudes. He’s donning orange and dark green Exoframe suit, the Exoframe is a suit used by the Centurions to attach and use their Assault Weapons Systems. This function is possible thanks to the use of circuitry bundled on the suit, in the show the suit may looked like an ordinary spandex suit whenever the Centurions wearing them but, most of the circuitry are probably placed on their attachment holes. Their attachment holes are located on their torso, lower arms and lower legs. Like Ace and Max, Ruby added this by using a brush stick covered with epoclay material and cut them off. With this I can attach Fire Force AWS to his body, his overall exoframe getup was painted into orange and dark green while his neck is painted flesh. Ruby once again is improving very much better than he did on Max which Jake feels more legit and solid and looking show accurate although, there will always be a flaw that need some fix but, Ruby still put up a great effort to recreate this classics. The base figure’s material are made from flexible hard plastic but, his exoframe sculpt work are mostly made from epoclay.
Jake’s head sculpt (HS) is shown to be calm looking but, I have to admit… His HS is nowhere lookalike to Jake’s cartoon counterpart… Jake’s facial model was based from Harrison Ford in his prime but, to be frank… I think he looks nothing like him at all in the cartoon… In this custom, his HS is a custom made by sfabsworkshop. It is a 3D printed HS from Tom Hardy’s 1/6 scale figure, originally it was supposed to have different looks but, in here he was painted closer to have Jake’s dark green eyes and clean face. Though, I have to admit he’s still nowhere lookalike to Jake’s cartoon face because, I still haven’t find any ML HS that has Jake’s closer looks. I have to say, his face is looking too realistic which would be a bit odd to be paired with Ace and Max, although I have to say it’s kinda fit for some kind of live action Centurions if there’s one. It does barely captured some of Jake’s facial features but, what I don’t like is his protruding stick out ears which is you can easily think “that’s not Jake!” or something like that. Like Max, Jake’s neck was repainted into flesh color similar to his HS skin color so, he’s shown to have bare neck but, there’s still something missing or maybe the paint was already chipped. Actually, his HS didn’t really fit deeper to his neck so, originally he got giraffe neck but, I like how Ruby added thick collars around his neck to hide that long neck but, I know it’s looking inaccurate from the show counterpart.
Jake’s base figure is from Marvel Legends Marvel’s Leader which he’s wearing orange plug suit, yellow for his wrist and lower legs and black line from torso. The hole on his back was for wearing his yellow cape but, since this is a custom figure review I’m just going to show the whole body part to see the comparison before and after. Frankly, I don’t know who he is and I don’t like the original figure as well but, good thing someone sold split body part which I won’t be having trouble selling his head or other accessories. The custom is alor better than I expected. Despite his armoric getup, we can still pose Jake pretty well although, paintapp may rub off. Jake entire exoframe suit is dominantly orange with dark green on several part of the body. His body is pretty spot on too but, Ruby kinda missed on the rear part of the torso which having flat looking holes. Yes, it’s not accurate to the original toy/cartoon counterpart but, the rests is great. The holes looks clean too and there’s no crack at all. Once again, this figure won’t work exactly like the original Kenner toys but, I’m still happy with how he turned out. Now, onto the articulations work.
His overall articulations works the same way like ML and Lightning Collection (LC) figures since but, due to his full armor exoframe epoclay material several articulations were limited. He got movable head that can be 360 degrees rotatable and bend up/down head. He can actually stretch and bend his waist thanks to that silly looking ab-crunch but, in this custom his exoframe clay completely blocking the articulation so, we cannot move his ab-crunch torso. His elbow articulations are even more limited compared to Max one so, Jake almost cannot bend his elbow but, he can if he’s still a Leader figure because he also got butterfly joints and bicep cut. He got rotatable 360 degrees lower torso but, limited due to his lower pelvic sculpt which molded together with his torso armor. Leg articulations works the same like other ML and LC figures but, there’s no cut on his lower leg. Several mobility are limited due to the exoframe sculpt. However, I’m fine with this because I never fond with Hasbro’s standard articulated figures so, I’m loving how Ruby made Jake exoframe suit hides that visible pegs on his double jointed elbow and knee.
Well, to the main part of this figure which is Jake’s Fire Force Assault Weapon System! It is a light AWS used by Centurion team-member Jake Rockwell. The system consists of a power back pack, plasma accelerator, plasma shell, radar sensor, twin laser cannon, plasma repulsar and a helmet. Ruby sculpted his AWS parts by handmade using epoclay material, his fingerprints traces are shown a little but, very less compared to Max and Ace AWS, which is another big improvements from him! Several parts still needs some fix but, in overall Fire Force’s parts works very solid and legit, there’s no loose parts at all. Some other parts also need some paint fix but, some also caused from my carelessness. Atleast, I’m still happy with how this custom turned out from my expectations. Jake is looking solid!
Helmet part! The Centurions helmet is generally used for head protection as well as allows them to breath underwater or in space. Unlike the original Kenner toy line even his previous Centurions conversions, Jake’s helmet have transparent visors just like he’s in the cartoon, well this visor might be minor addition but, it all makes sense on how the Centurions breath in certain place without any oxygen around. Jake’s helmet is mostly used whenever he’s using Fire Force, Swing Shot and Detonator AWS, his helmet was also done by handmade from Ruby. The overall helmet was sculpted simple but, much more complex compared to both Max and Ace which got better details especially his visor, which made the figure looking more accurate to the show. However, despite being accurate but, his helmet would look different compared to the other helmets. Though, I’m still okay with it because I want this figure to be closer to show accurate. The helmet was done with some minor line details based from kenner toys. The overall helmet was painted 2 colors; orange on the front and dark green on the back. Unfortunately, his helmet is a little too thick which can stuck between his stucked out ears but, atleast still fit.
Fire Force AWS can also be combine without fusing with Jake to create somekind of offline mode when their AWS is remain unused. Since, most of their joints are compatible I can create multiple modes but, here I only showing one mode. I have to say, Ruby made this alot better than he did on Skyknight or Cruiser, the compatible joints are very convenient to make any kinds of mode. However, Fire Force wasn’t used much in episode 55 (To Dare Dominion), in this episode which there’s a scene where the Centurions AWS turned into somekind of robotic creatures due to the alternate reality that Doc Terror created, at this scene Jake was using his Wild Weasel AWS and transformed into somekind of robotic weasel like creature. So, not much is known on how Fire Force would look if it’s transformed, and I rarely see Jake’s Fire Force combined 1 in the cartoon. Probably, there’s one but, I forgot which episode.
Jake’s Fire Force AWS parts are compatible to several hole attachments which I can attach plasma accelerator/plasma repulsar/radar sensor/twin laser cannon on either his chest or back and even in his shoulders.
Exclusively made for Jake, he’s included with alternate helmet from one of his later AWS called Awesome Auger. Awesome Auger Awesome Auger is an Assault Weapon System for Jake Rockwell. It is one of the unreleased toys from the second year of the Centurions toy line. It was featured in later episodes of the TV series. Ruby seemingly able to make the rests but, due the toy being unreleased so, the reference for this AWS are not enough for Ruby to make complete conversion. Especially, we don’t know how the actual toy would work. In this review, the helmet was made by the same epoclay handmade by Ruby, and painted into gun metal color. In the show, the helmet was added with 2 lights feature above it’s forehead part for dark places such as underground. It’s just a sculpted squares but, Ruby strangely made 3 squares for it so, it’s slightly inaccurate. The helmet seemingly larger and wider than Fire Force one because it looks kinda hollow for Jake’s head but, it was actually fit enough.
COMPARISON
Comparing between ML Ace and Max, Jake is slightly the tallest due to Jake’s long neck but, comparing between their arm positions they still stand closely same height. However, comparing between their HS, Jake’s head is the smallest from all and yes… His realistic looking face didn’t match well to both Ace and Max… I’m thinking of changing his HS someday if there’s a fitting one for Jake. Also, the flat back is a letdown as Jake’s rear exoframe looks very different compared to his fellow Centurions.
Both helmets are pretty much same scale but, Fire Force’s helmet was sculpted to have smaller visor shape and added transparent material visor. It’s good that Ruby finally able to do this but, this made the rests of the helmets different since they’re hollow without any visor. Both Fire Force and Awesome Auger are only wearable to Jake’s head but, I won’t be interested to have Ace or Max wearing Jake’s AWS, since both Ace and Max never borrow Jake’s AWS in the show.
More of solid custom work from Ruby, Jake is looking great! Although, I have to admit he lacks some likeness from the show but, he plays much more solid compared to even Max. He definitely still need some fix but, still not worst compared to Ace however, that can be done some other time if Ruby’s willing to fix or improve or maybe accepting to make more of his AWS. Atm, I’m fine with this since I finally get this figure after I lost the Kenner toys almost like 30 years ago. Since this is a custom work, you cannot expect this to be fully functional like the original Kenner toys. If you’re interested in this you can ask Ruby to make one, next he’ll be working on Rex Charger!
Pros:
- Very solid sculpt work and details.
- Quite close to Jake Rockwell appearance in the show.
- Attachable parts, despite it’s a custom figure.
- Probably the only existing 6 inch figures of Centurions at this moment.
- Easy on the budget compared to buying the vintage Kenner toys.
Cons:
- Paint app problem.
- Clay material is a little too heavy and very fragile.
- Several articulation problem due to his Exoframe armor parts.
- Some likeness problem such as realistic looking HS and the flat back of his exoframe.
