Another Zyuranger review!! And it’s not SHF again but, after Tyranno Ranger here comes Tamashii Buddies Dragon Ranger, Burai!! The 6th member of the Zyurangers and Geki’s older brother or better be known as Tommy Oliver, the Mighty Morphin Green Ranger. Tamashii Buddies (TB) is a line made by Tamashii Nations produced by Bandai, the figures features them in deformed/chibi style accompanied by display base and wall. Dragon Ranger also only comes with his US franchise box. Like Tyranno one, the box was overally white colored and made very simple with green lines and fonts with TB logo and the small “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” logo and it’s written “Green Ranger” however, once again the Japanese katakana was written “ドラゴンレンジャー” which reads “Dragon Ranger” instead of “グリーンレンジャー” or reads “Green Ranger”. The front box also features window for us to see the figure, while the product number of this series was 030 and it’s regular release. Unlike Tyranno, the back box features more variant products, they are Tyranno Ranger, Ptera Ranger, Lord Zedd and Daizyujin. And we also get to see 1 photo of the full tower of the whole TB figures featured and there’s an instruction manual how to deal with them. Okay, unboxing time!
The contents consists of Dragon Ranger figure attached on his base display, the rest are 4 poles with the short one and wallpaper tray.
Yes, every Tamashii Buddies figures were included with wallpaper tray for the figure’s background in order to display them with the pole. Once again it’s another printed paper and honestly, I don’t really fond with it. Dragon Ranger comes with green with black shade colored wallpaper with a symbol of his Dino medal with some lightning FX resembling MMPR’s logo but, much lesser than Tyranno one.
To display him with the wallpaper, you just need to attach the 2 poles on the back of the figure. On the base, you must attach them with the peg which directly on the bottom of the pole because, the other side has different location of peg joint. Then insert the wallpaper into one of the attached pole’s paper holes, then attach the other pole and match up with the wallpaper. And lastly attach the short pole onto the 2 pegs of the attached poles. Make sure to attach them properly and becareful not to attach them by force if you’re having problem because, the paper tray may be easily crumpled.
Dragon Ranger wears green helmet, green spandex with dragon armor on his chest with 2 armbands, white gloves, boots with golden wrist and green triangular shape, golden belt buckler with black holster and Zyusouken. Dragon Ranger pose is the same pose like Tyranno standing with slight open legs, his arms bend to the front with his hand gripping into fist. The pose was like he’s ready to go power up/charging just like Son Goku’s charging up or goes into Super Saiyan, it was another reused body from TB Dragon Ball series which most of the characters posed like this. Dragon Ranger or even Green Ranger also didn’t appeared to be this bulky in the series but, in favor from the most MMPR toys which the Rangers made to be overbulked up, Tamashii Nations decided to make them bulky as well. Dragon Ranger also gets detailed sculpt work such as fabric details, belt, Dragon Buckler and that sculpted Zyusouken in the holster. But, once again they missed the details of the Dino medal’s sculpt. The paintjob is very messy and even worse than Tyranno Ranger, on the back view on belt area, there’re several unknown red paint transfers. However, it’s still the best I could picked. The figure also glued to the base and it was made from hard plastic, no metal/diecast included at all.
Dragon Ranger’s helmet sculpt looks better than his SHF figures as the shape of his dragon snout looks thinner like in the show but, once again it has no sculpted lines. The paintjob was good but, has some paint transfer and some unpainted parts and the quality of the head is a bit rough in several area but, it’s quite unnoticeable. In front view Dragon Ranger’s head is shown to be barely bend to the side but, you can’t actually notice it in other view.
The same thought like Tyranno one… With pole and paper attached, the figure only good when you view them from any front angle but, other angles like side or back… They looked pathetic, especially on the back one.
The alternate poles also allows us to create TB tower but, in order to create the tower we must atleast have 2 TB figures. Now, with the existence of Dragon Ranger I can create my own TB tower with my Tyranno Ranger. You can either make Dragon Ranger on top or under Tyranno Ranger. Surely, 2 weren’t enough to make large tower you so, need more! But, not for me of course… Because, I only cares on what I really likes to collect.
COMPARISON
Comparing between his younger brother, both stand equally except the footing position of my Dragon Ranger seems a bit too straight forward while Tyranno Ranger is straight upward. You can see from the side view, my Dragon Ranger is like he was about to do the anti-gravity lean dance. Despite that, it doesn’t really matter since he can still stand without any worry of falling but, a single shake may still hurt him. You can check on my TB Tyranno Ranger review here.
You can already tell the difference by their proportions but, there is indeed some simillarities on their helmet. However, there’s some differences after I did a close comparison on their helmet, aside the missing helmet line, TB Dragon Ranger has sharper tip of snout than SHF Dragon Ranger. You can check on my SHF Dragon Ranger review here.
Overall, it’s pretty much the same thoughts like owning Tyranno Ranger but, more with mixed feeling by those defects… It’s not surprising anymore from Bandai Tamashii Nations for not learning their lessons on their quality control. But, I’m still glad I picked the least better one for this review… In terms of details of the sculpt work I recommend this very much especially on how cheap they are. It’s another great addition for your collections, if you like and collect Super Sentai or Power Rangers figures/toys or maybe as a Tommy the Green Ranger fan. As in the Toy Fair 2017 and Tamashii World Tour México 2017, we get to see the revealing of TB Black Ranger, Blue Ranger, Yellow Ranger and White Ranger, meaning Bandai has completed making the whole TB MMPR series. However, until now there is no news anymore regarding those 4 rangers, Bandai seemingly forgetting and instead went for other line release. Man, I really hate when a company did this! I was expecting for Mammoth Ranger and Kibaranger so badly… But, I’m sort of understand why since the series still doesn’t sell quite much until now.
Pros:
- Good sculpt work.
- Good for displaying the figure in the cabinet or detolf.
- Good window box.
- Cheap price.
Cons:
- Some incomplete and misspaint on the paintjob but, not a big deal to me.
- Messy paintjob on the back belt.
- Rough quality material in several helmet part.
- Bad quality on the wallpaper and looks easily crumpled.
- Body and pose reused from TB Dragon Ball series.
